Tinubu celebrates Babangida at 85
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military president General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida on his 85th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose leadership left a lasting mark on Nigeria.
In a birthday message issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Babangida’s military career and his role in shaping the country during his years as military president.
The President said Babangida’s eight-year administration influenced Nigeria’s political, economic and geographical development. He also credited the former leader with establishing infrastructure, agencies and institutions that continue to contribute to national development.
Tinubu praises Babangida’s national contributions
Tinubu acknowledged that Babangida remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s political history.
According to the President, the former military leader’s administration expanded aspects of the Nigerian economy and established institutions that have continued to serve the country.

The President noted that Babangida now lives a quieter life at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State. He added that the former military president still provides advice and guidance on national issues.
Tinubu said Babangida’s experience remains valuable to younger Nigerians who can learn from his years of public service.
IBB ruled Nigeria for eight years
Babangida became Nigeria’s military president after the August 1985 coup that removed Muhammadu Buhari from power.
His administration governed the country for eight years and introduced several political and economic reforms.
The period remains one of the most discussed chapters in Nigeria’s modern political history. Babangida’s government also oversaw major changes to the country’s administrative structure and created several institutions.
His administration remains controversial, particularly over political decisions taken during the transition programme and the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
However, Tinubu’s birthday message focused on Babangida’s contributions to national development and his continuing role as an elder statesman.

The President wished Babangida continued strength and good health as he marks his 85th birthday.
