What the 2026 ranking means for Nigerian universities
The July 2026 Webometrics ranking places the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos at the top of the Nigerian list.
However, Nigeria’s highest-ranked institution, UI, placed 1,291st globally. This means no Nigerian university featured among the world’s top 1,000 institutions in the ranking.
The results highlight the continued gap between Nigeria’s leading universities and institutions occupying the highest global positions.
The ranking also shows the strong presence of US universities at the top, particularly among institutions with significant digital visibility and research output.
