Ronaldinho Returns to Professional Football at 46, Signs for Ravenna
Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho is set to make a sensational return to professional football at the age of 46.
The former Barcelona and AC Milan star has agreed to join Italian Serie C club Ravenna FC. His return comes more than a decade after his last competitive appearance.
Ronaldinho last played professional football for Brazilian side Fluminense in 2015. His move to Ravenna will therefore mark his first competitive appearance in 11 years.
The comeback also represents a return to Italian football for the 2002 World Cup winner. Ronaldinho previously spent three seasons with AC Milan between 2008 and 2011.
Ronaldinho joins Ravenna ownership group
Ronaldinho’s involvement with Ravenna goes beyond his return to the pitch.
The Brazilian has also become part of the club’s ownership group as Ravenna begins an ambitious project to rebuild the team. The club hopes to attract more investment, supporters and international attention through the project.
There had been some uncertainty over whether Ronaldinho would actually play competitive football after joining the club.
However, Ravenna owner Ignazio Cipriani has confirmed that the former Brazil international will feature in at least one Serie C match.
Cipriani said Ronaldinho’s involvement is not simply a promotional exercise. The football icon is expected to make an appearance in a home league fixture.
When will Ronaldinho make his Ravenna debut?
Ronaldinho’s exact return date has not yet been announced.
He is also not expected to play in Ravenna’s opening match of the new season against Reggiana, instead, the club is expected to announce his competitive debut at a later date.
Beyond his role on the pitch, Ronaldinho will also help promote Ravenna and its wider sporting project.
