Peter Obi Calls for National Unity, Urges Nigerians to Protect Their Votes in 2027
Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to put national unity ahead of ethnic and religious differences as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), said Nigeria needs a leader who can bring citizens together and address insecurity and other challenges affecting the country.
The former Anambra State governor made the comments during a global digital town hall on Sunday, October 4. The virtual meeting focused on voter mobilisation, election security and ways Nigerians can protect their votes in the 2027 presidential election.
Obi says Nigeria needs unity ahead of 2027
According to Obi, divisions along ethnic and religious lines have not protected Nigerians from the economic difficulties facing the country.
He argued that Nigerians across different regions face many of the same challenges, including high living costs and insecurity.
“We need unity in our country,” Obi said during the town hall.
He added that neither ethnicity nor religion determines the price Nigerians pay for basic goods and services.
The NDC candidate therefore called for greater focus on issues that affect citizens regardless of their background.
Peter Obi urges voters to protect their ballots
Beyond national unity, Obi also spoke about the importance of protecting votes during the 2027 election.

He urged voters to remain at their polling units after casting their ballots until the votes are counted.
Obi said citizens must take an active role in the electoral process instead of leaving the protection of their votes entirely to political parties or institutions.
His campaign, he said, is working to expand its network of polling agents across the country.
He also said the NDC would work with other political parties and stakeholders to support free, fair and credible elections.
Obi warns against vote buying and intimidation
The former Anambra governor also warned voters against allowing money or intimidation to influence their choices in 2027.
He argued that resources used to induce voters could instead be directed towards areas such as security, healthcare and education.
“If you accept money from them, that is money they would otherwise have spent on security, hospitals, and education,” Obi said.
The comments form part of his wider campaign message on voter participation and electoral accountability ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi calls for stronger support for security agencies
In addition, Obi called for improved support for Nigeria’s security agencies.
He said security personnel need the equipment and logistics required to carry out their duties effectively.
The NDC candidate also called for greater attention to the welfare of security personnel and their families.
“We have security agencies, and they must function effectively,” he said.
Obi argued that the next administration should provide the necessary support while ensuring that security remains a major national priority.
NDC expands its polling agent network
Vote protection has become an important part of the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 election.
Obi said his political organisation is working to deploy polling agents across the country.
The strategy is aimed at ensuring that votes are monitored from polling units and that citizens remain engaged throughout the counting process.
Earlier reports also indicated that figures within Obi’s political movement had discussed building a nationwide structure for monitoring election results from polling units through the collation process.
Obi’s 2027 campaign focuses on voter mobilisation
The global town hall was part of Obi’s wider mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 election.
The event was promoted as an opportunity for Nigerians in the country and abroad to engage with the NDC presidential candidate on issues surrounding the election.
The NDC officially affirmed Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election at its special convention in May 2026. The party also affirmed Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.
Obi previously contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party.
What Obi wants voters to do on election day
Obi’s message to voters is centred on active participation.
He urged Nigerians to:
- Cast their votes based on their preferred candidates.
- Remain at polling units until votes are counted.
- Support the deployment of polling agents.
- Reject intimidation and vote buying.
- Demand transparency throughout the electoral process.
- Remain engaged beyond election day.
His position is that protecting the electoral process requires participation from voters, political parties and other stakeholders.
Peter Obi: “Our country needs unity”
As the 2027 election approaches, Obi is making national unity a central theme of his campaign message.
He said Nigerians should look beyond ethnic and religious divisions when considering political leadership.
At the same time, he linked national unity to broader issues such as security, economic hardship and public services.
For Obi, the 2027 election should therefore involve more than choosing political candidates. He said voters must also remain involved in protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
With political parties already preparing their grassroots structures, voter mobilisation and election monitoring are expected to remain major issues ahead of the 2027 general elections.
