International Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has opened up about the inspiration behind her highly anticipated third studio album, Starr Girl, revealing that the project is closely connected to her personal experiences and growth over the past few years.
Speaking during a recent appearance on Apple Music’s The Dotty Show, the Grammy-nominated singer explained that she deliberately returned to creating music inspired by her real-life journey after feeling disconnected from some of her previous work.
According to Ayra Starr, Starr Girl represents a more authentic version of herself, capturing her transformation from a young artist into a confident woman managing businesses, global fame, and personal ambitions.
“Definitely something I wanted to communicate because it was my experience. And at one point, I feel like I wasn’t making music or I wasn’t releasing music from my experiences, and it kind of felt detached to the art. And I was like, you know what? I want to come back to it. Like, I want to sing about where I am presently,” she said.
The singer added that her personal evolution played a major role in shaping songs such as her hit single Hot Body.
“I’m becoming a woman. I’m owning businesses. I’m doing all of these things. Like, look what a hot body can do.”

Ayra Starr Reflects on the Success of ‘Hot Body’
Ayra Starr also discussed the impressive reception of Hot Body, describing it as one of those records that everyone around her immediately believed would become a hit.
The award-winning singer revealed that early reactions on social media gave her confidence that the track would resonate with listeners worldwide.
“Hot Body is one of those songs that even me, I’m just like, Omo, omo. It’s such a good song,” she said.
She recalled receiving an overwhelming response after sharing snippets of the track on TikTok and Instagram before its official release.
“When Hot Body got released, like even before I released it, when I posted it on TikTok and on Instagram, the reaction already, I was like, I have one. I was like, another one, thank you. Another one.”
Ayra Starr further highlighted the significance of performing the song alongside Coldplay shortly after its release, a moment she considers one of the highlights of the record’s journey.
What Fans Can Expect From Starr Girl
With anticipation building ahead of the album’s August 14, 2026 release date, Ayra Starr says fans should prepare for a project filled with variety and unexpected musical directions.
The singer explained that she enjoys challenging expectations and constantly reinventing her sound rather than repeating familiar formulas.
“I like to do different things, and I like to surprise you guys. You know this. Once you expect me to do something, I want to do the absolute opposite. Just expect me to exist in multitudes, respectfully and nicely.”
Ahead of the album launch, Ayra Starr recently released Tornado, a new single she describes as the perfect soundtrack for getting ready for a night out.
“I love to make songs that people can get ready to because I’m always going out. So that’s like my routine. I feel sexy, and I was like, yeah, wind like a tornado.”
