Nollywood actress Blessing Nze Obasi has spoken out about the backlash she received after playing a lesbian inmate in the second season of the hit drama series Blood Sisters.
The actress addressed the controversy during a recent interview, where she explained that some viewers, particularly within Christian circles, questioned her faith because of the character she portrayed on screen.
According to Obasi, the criticism stemmed from a misunderstanding of the difference between an actor’s professional role and personal convictions.

Blessing Nze Obasi Defends Her Blood Sisters Character
Speaking about the reaction to her role in Blood Sisters, Obasi stressed that acting requires performers to step into different characters and tell stories that reflect various aspects of society.
She noted that many critics assumed the role reflected her personal beliefs, despite the fact that actors often portray characters whose lifestyles and experiences differ significantly from their own.
“The Christians came for me and attacked. They said ‘as a child of God how would I take such role’ and I said ‘we are telling real stories of what happens in the prison.’
However the production company was sensitive enough not to depict the horridness of it. They are not in support of it (lesbianism) but they are telling the story. There is so much positivity. I put my mind on that,” she said.
The actress added that the experience highlighted how some audiences struggle to separate storytelling from personal endorsement.
Blood Sisters Storyline Reflects Real-Life Experiences
Obasi explained that the storyline featured in Blood Sisters was inspired by situations that occur in real life, particularly within correctional facilities.
She emphasized that the intention behind the character was not to promote same-gender relationships but to portray realities that exist within certain environments.
According to her, the production team handled the subject carefully and avoided unnecessary graphic scenes while remaining committed to authentic storytelling.
The actress maintained that films and television series often tackle difficult topics to create awareness and present a broader picture of society.
She argued that portraying a character does not automatically mean an actor supports every action or lifestyle depicted on screen.
Her comments have since generated mixed reactions online. While some viewers defended her position and argued that actors should not be judged based on the roles they play, others maintained that public figures should be mindful of the messages they communicate through their work.
One social media user questioned whether audiences had considered the context of the role before criticizing the actress, while another argued that Christians have the right to challenge fellow believers when they feel certain values are being compromised

Despite the debate, Obasi remains firm in her stance that Blood Sisters was focused on telling an important story rather than promoting a particular lifestyle.
The actress said she chose to focus on the positive themes within the series and the broader message the production sought to communicate.
