Folarin Balogun etched his name into FIFA World Cup history after scoring and being sent off in the same knockout match as the United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 to secure a place in the round of 16.
The striker of Nigerian descent delivered another important goal for the Americans before his evening took an unexpected turn with a red card in the 64th minute. The dismissal means Balogun will miss the United States’ last-16 clash against Belgium in Seattle.
Despite ending the match on a disappointing note, Folarin Balogun achieved a remarkable statistical milestone. He became only the fourth player in World Cup history to score and receive a red card in the same knockout fixture.
The exclusive list features Brazilian legend Garrincha, who accomplished the feat in 1962, Brazil icon Ronaldinho in 2002, and French great Zinedine Zidane in 2006.
Balogun’s goal was also his third of the tournament, moving him into second place among American players with the most goals scored in a single FIFA World Cup campaign.
The United States maintained their advantage after Balogun’s dismissal, with midfielder Malik Tillman sealing the victory through a direct free-kick. His effort made him only the second American player to score directly from a free-kick at a World Cup, following Eric Wynalda’s achievement in 1994.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed resilience after being reduced to ten men, successfully protecting their lead to advance to the knockout stage.
However, Balogun’s suspension presents a significant selection challenge ahead of the meeting with Belgium. As the team’s leading scorer in the competition, his absence will leave a gap in the American attack.
Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards insisted the squad is confident it has enough quality to cope without the striker.
“Pretty cool record, huh? We told him that we’ve got his back now. We’ve known we’re a team of 26, not just one.
So, ultimately, we’re going to miss him for the next game, but we know that if it’s (Ricardo) Pepi or Haji (Wright), whoever the case, is going to step up next and that they’re going to do their job just as well as he did,” Richards said.

With Folarin Balogun suspended, Pochettino is expected to choose between Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright to spearhead the attack as the United States aim to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Although his tournament has been interrupted by suspension, Balogun’s performances have already made a major impact.
His goals have helped drive the United States into the knockout rounds, while his place alongside Zidane, Ronaldinho and Garrincha ensures his latest World Cup appearance will be remembered as one of the competition’s most unusual chapters.
