Goalkeeper Undergoes Surgery After Head Injury, Expects Return in Weeks
A goalkeeper has undergone surgery after suffering a head injury during Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton, according to a report published by Vanguard. The player has reassured supporters that the operation went well and said he hopes to return within a few weeks.
The injury occurred in the 67th minute at Hill Dickinson Stadium when the goalkeeper collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while attempting to punch away a free kick.
Both players received treatment on the pitch. However, while Branthwaite recovered quickly, the goalkeeper required more extensive medical attention from the club’s medical team and paramedics.
He was eventually carried off on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. Chelsea subsequently introduced 21-year-old Mike Penders as his replacement in the 75th minute.
The extended stoppage contributed to 11 minutes of added time at the end of the match.
Goalkeeper Gives Fans Update After Surgery
Following the incident, the goalkeeper shared a photograph of himself in a hospital bed on social media and thanked fans for their messages of support.
He said the operation had been successful and expressed satisfaction with Chelsea’s victory and clean sheet.
“The operation went well. The most important thing is that we won and with a bow at 0. We’ll be back in a few weeks,” he wrote, according to the report.
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso had earlier told reporters that the player was conscious when he left the stadium and had been taken to hospital for precautionary examinations.
Alonso said the medical team needed more time to assess the full extent of the injury.
He described the incident as a concussion but indicated that further medical assessment was necessary before drawing conclusions about the goalkeeper’s condition.
Pedro Neto Goals Secure Chelsea Victory
Chelsea claimed all three points through two goals from Pedro Neto, ending Everton’s unbeaten start to the campaign and recording the club’s first clean sheet of the season.
Neto dedicated the result to the injured goalkeeper and wished him a speedy recovery.
The Chelsea forward said the team was pleased with the result but saddened by the injury, adding that the victory was for their teammate.
Everton manager David Moyes also expressed concern. He said he had not seen the collision clearly from the dugout and hoped the goalkeeper would recover quickly.
Alonso Praises Chelsea’s Defensive Display
Alonso praised his players for their defensive discipline and ability to manage pressure during the away fixture.
He said Chelsea had handled difficult moments well, particularly when defending corners and throw-ins, and maintained their shape throughout the match.
The coach added that the performance offered several positives for the team to build on as the Premier League campaign continued.
