Cameroon Shock Super Falcons 1-0 as New WAFCON Champion Is Guaranteed
Cameroon have ended Nigeria’s reign as African champions after defeating the Super Falcons 1-0 in a tense quarter-final clash at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. The victory on Sunday, August 9, sent the Indomitable Lionesses into the semi-finals and, more importantly, secured Cameroon a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
For Nigeria, however, the defeat brought their WAFCON title defence to an unexpected end.
Nyadjou’s stunning strike decides Cameroon vs Nigeria
The decisive moment arrived in the 19th minute when Cameroon midfielder Myriam Maéva Nyadjou produced a spectacular long-range effort. The 20-year-old struck the ball with power and precision, sending it into the top corner beyond the reach of Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
It was a goal that immediately changed the complexion of the contest.
Nigeria attempted to respond almost immediately. Rasheedat Ajibade delivered a dangerous ball into the Cameroon penalty area, but Gift Monday could not make the required connection. Then, in the 28th minute, the Super Falcons came close again when Rinsola Babajide’s delivery found Jennifer Echegini.
However, Echegini’s attempt was stopped by Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina. Consequently, Cameroon went into the half-time interval with their narrow advantage intact.

After the break, Nigeria increased the pressure as they searched desperately for a way back into the contest.
The Super Falcons created opportunities, but Cameroon remained disciplined and compact at the back.
Moreover, goalkeeper Bihina produced an outstanding performance when Nigeria threatened to level the match. One of her biggest interventions came in the 70th minute when she stretched out a hand to deny Uchenna Kanu’s powerful header.
The save proved crucial because Nigeria continued to push forward as the clock ticked down.
Cameroon survive late Nigerian pressure
With Nigeria throwing more players forward, Cameroon also had opportunities to extend their lead. Six minutes before the end of regulation time, Achta Toko Njoya came close to making it 2-0 from a difficult angle.
Her free-kick forced Nnadozie into action, with the Nigerian goalkeeper producing a sharp save to push the effort over the crossbar. Nigeria then came agonisingly close to forcing extra time.
Substitute Esther Okoronkwo used her pace to get past her marker before cutting inside and attempting a left-footed finish.
However, her shot narrowly missed the target.
That proved to be one of Nigeria’s final opportunities as Cameroon held on to complete a memorable 1-0 victory.
Cameroon qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup
Beyond reaching the WAFCON semi-finals, Cameroon’s victory carries an even greater reward.
By advancing to the last four, the Indomitable Lionesses secured automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
FIFA’s qualification format confirms that the four WAFCON semi-finalists qualify directly for the global tournament, while the four quarter-final losers move into a separate play-off route for two additional African opportunities.
Cameroon therefore achieved two major objectives with their quarter-final victory: a place in the WAFCON semi-finals and a return to the Women’s World Cup.
The team had previously appeared at the Women’s World Cup in 2015 and 2019.
Nigeria’s WAFCON title defence comes to an end
For the Super Falcons, the result represents a major disappointment. Nigeria entered the competition as defending champions and among the favourites to lift the trophy again.
However, the defeat means they will not be involved in the WAFCON semi-finals. Nevertheless, their World Cup hopes are not completely over.
As one of the losing quarter-finalists, Nigeria moves into the African play-off route for the remaining World Cup opportunities. FIFA’s official competition format confirms that the four quarter-final losers will contest play-off matches, with two teams eventually advancing to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.
Therefore, Nigeria still has a pathway to Brazil 2027, although it is now significantly more difficult.

Nigeria’s elimination also guarantees that the 2026 WAFCON will have a new champion.
The Super Falcons had been among the dominant forces in African women’s football, but their defeat means they cannot defend the continental title.
