ECOWAS $65,000 Startup Awards 2026: How Nigerian Startups Can Apply
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opened applications for the 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards, giving eligible startups across the region an opportunity to compete for a combined cash prize of $65,000.
The second edition of the programme is aimed at identifying and supporting startups developing innovative solutions in areas including digital transformation, regional integration and sustainable value-chain development.
For Nigerian entrepreneurs and other founders across ECOWAS member states, the competition also offers opportunities beyond the cash prize, including investor connections, mentorship, regional exposure and a six-month acceleration programme.
How much is the ECOWAS Startup Awards prize?
A total of $65,000 will be shared among the top three startups.
The prize structure is:
- Winner: $30,000
- First runner-up: $20,000
- Second runner-up: $15,000
Selected startups will also benefit from networking opportunities with investors, entrepreneurs and policymakers across the ECOWAS region.
Other benefits include mentorship, regional exposure, a six-month acceleration programme and access to digital tools such as computers, accessories and software.
Which startups can apply?
The 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards is open to businesses operating in six strategic sectors.
1. EdTech
This category covers startups using technology to improve education, training, learning and skills development.
2. FinTech
FinTech startups developing technology-based financial products and services are eligible to participate.
3. HealthTech
This category is designed for technology-driven businesses working to improve healthcare delivery and related services.
4. AgriTech
Startups using technology to improve agriculture, food production and food systems can apply.
5. CleanTech
This covers startups developing clean technologies, climate solutions and other environmentally focused innovations.
6. TravelTech
Businesses using technology to improve tourism, hospitality and travel services are also eligible.
ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026 eligibility requirements
Applicants must satisfy the programme’s eligibility conditions before submitting an application.
To qualify, a startup must:
- Be founded by a citizen of an ECOWAS member state.
- Be registered and based in an ECOWAS country.
- Have been operating for at least two years.
- Have a functional product or service.
- Demonstrate market traction or the potential to scale.
- Provide all documents required for the application.
Nigerian startups that satisfy these requirements can therefore participate in the competition.
Documents Nigerian startups need to apply
Founders are advised to prepare their documents before beginning the application process.
The required materials include:
- Completed application form covering Sections A-J.
- National passport or an ECOWAS-approved identification document for the lead founder.
- Recent colour passport photograph.
- Business registration certificate, where applicable.
- Two years of financial statements, management accounts or financial projections.
- Business plan of no more than 10 pages.
- Pitch deck of no more than 10 slides.
- One-minute pitch video in MP4, MOV or WebM format.
The founder’s identification document must be submitted in PDF or image format and must not exceed 10MB. The passport photograph must not exceed 5MB, while the pitch video has a maximum file size of 100MB.
The business plan is expected to be single-spaced, using Times New Roman font at size 12.
How will the ECOWAS Startup Awards winners be selected?
The selection process will be conducted in two main stages.
National selection
ECOWAS member states will nominate half of their allocated startup slots.
The remaining slots will be filled through applications submitted directly by the public. This means eligible startups do not necessarily have to receive a national nomination before they can compete.
Regional finals
Shortlisted startups will proceed to the regional stage, where they will pitch before an independent jury in Abuja.
The final winners will be determined through scoring and consensus by judges with backgrounds in business, investment and policymaking.
The organisers have also indicated that judges will be required to observe conflict-of-interest and confidentiality rules.
ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026 important dates
Startup founders should take note of the following dates:
- August 3, 2026: Applications opened
- August 31, 2026: Application deadline
- September 21-25, 2026: Virtual masterclasses and startup clinics
- September 28-30, 2026: Physical programme in Abuja
- September 30, 2026: Regional finals and final pitches
The virtual masterclasses and startup clinics are scheduled to begin at 9:00am.
The Abuja event will feature pitch competitions, exhibitions and investor deal rooms.

Eligible startup founders can submit their applications through the official ECOWAS Startup Awards application portal.
Applicants should prepare their identification documents, business registration information, financial records, business plan, pitch deck and one-minute pitch video before starting the application.
The application form can be saved while applicants progress through the different sections.
