Arday, 41, was reportedly found unresponsive at an address on Friday, August 14, 2026. His death came just nine days after he resigned from Cambridge University.

Arday had faced intense scrutiny over his academic work before his resignation.
Jason Arday dies at 41
Arday made history at Cambridge in 2023. He became the youngest Black professor in the university’s history, he also served as a professor of sociology and a fellow of Jesus College.
His resignation came on August 5, 2026 following several reports about his academic record and professional background. The reports triggered renewed debate about his work and achievements. Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice expressed deep sadness after learning of his death.
Plagiarism allegations surrounded his final days
Questions about Arday’s doctoral thesis formed a major part of the controversy as The Times reported on July 24 that it had examined his 2015 PhD thesis. The newspaper identified passages it described as identical or nearly identical to earlier academic material. The material reportedly came from work written by another researcher as Arday acknowledged that mistakes had occurred.
However, he rejected claims that he was a liar or an academic fraud, he also criticised the level of public scrutiny directed at him. Arday said the attention had gone beyond normal academic disagreement.
Cambridge planned an independent investigation
Cambridge University had previously dismissed plagiarism claims involving Arday, noting that Liverpool John Moores University had already investigated the allegations.
However, Cambridge later announced a fresh independent review. The review would examine the circumstances surrounding Arday’s appointment.
The University of Glasgow also announced a review of his earlier academic work. These developments came shortly before Arday left his Cambridge position.
Arday spoke about the personal impact
Arday said the scrutiny had taken a significant personal toll, he described the situation as much more serious than ordinary academic criticism.

His resignation statement also referred to the personal cost of the controversy. The academic maintained that he had faced unfair portrayals. He rejected descriptions that presented him as dishonest or fraudulent.
His comments came as media attention around his career continued to grow.
Family condemns alleged harassment
Arday’s family criticised what it called a campaign of harassment following his death. The family also referred to what it described as misinformation about the academic.
Simon & Schuster released the statement on behalf of his relatives. They described Arday as a gentle person who always tried to see the best in others.
The family said his death had left them devastated. They remembered him as a father, partner, brother, uncle and son.
Reports also questioned charity claims
British media reports raised additional questions about Arday’s charity fundraising claims. The reports examined his claim that he had raised £5.5 million for charity, that figure equals roughly $7.4 million.
His reported fundraising efforts included major endurance challenges, these included running 30 marathons in 35 days. He also reportedly covered about 965 kilometres in six days.
Arday disputed the way some reports portrayed his claims. He said he had been unfairly characterised as a liar and fantasist.
His memoir also attracted attention
Arday’s memoir, Great and Unfortunate Things, was released in the United States. The book was scheduled for publication in the United Kingdom later in August.
It explores his childhood experiences and subsequent academic career. The memoir also attracted scrutiny during the wider controversy. However, Simon & Schuster said no plagiarism allegations concerned the book.
A historic Cambridge appointment
Arday’s Cambridge appointment marked a major milestone in British academia. His 2023 appointment made him the university’s youngest Black professor, his work focused on sociology and wider social issues and his career also attracted attention because of his personal journey and achievements. His death has now brought that career to an abrupt end. The circumstances surrounding his final days remain a subject of public interest.
Police say death was not suspicious
The Metropolitan Police said officers did not currently regard the death as suspicious as authorities have not publicly connected his death with the controversy surrounding his academic career. Police investigations into the circumstances of his death are continuing. Cambridge and members of the academic community have expressed their condolences.
Arday’s death is likely to renew discussions about academic accountability and media scrutiny. It may also raise questions about the pressures facing academics under intense public attention.
For now, authorities continue to treat the death as unexpected rather than suspicious.
