Juventus agree deal for Guglielmo Vicario
Juventus have reached an agreement with Tottenham to sign goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on an initial season-long loan. The deal includes an option for the Italian club to make the transfer permanent for £8.5 million (€10 million).
The move comes after Juventus explored a deal for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. However, negotiations for the Argentina international did not progress as expected, prompting the Serie A club to turn its attention to Vicario.
Vicario is now set to return to Italy after three seasons in the Premier League. His move to Juventus could give him another opportunity to establish himself at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Vicario set for return to Italy
Vicario joined Tottenham from Empoli in 2023 after making a strong impression in Serie A. He quickly became an important member of the Spurs squad and earned recognition for his performances in the Premier League.
His future in north London had become uncertain during the summer transfer window. Tottenham reportedly viewed Antonin Kinsky as their preferred goalkeeper, increasing the possibility of Vicario leaving the club.

Juventus’ interest offered the goalkeeper a route back to Italian football. The proposed loan deal also gives the Turin club the chance to assess Vicario before deciding whether to complete a permanent transfer.
Juventus move on from Emiliano Martinez
Juventus had previously identified Martinez as a major target for their goalkeeping position. The club reportedly made an £8.5 million (€10 million) offer, but Aston Villa rejected the proposal.
Villa’s valuation of the goalkeeper, together with concerns surrounding his recent injury issues, contributed to Juventus reconsidering their approach. Martinez has also attracted attention from other European clubs during the current transfer window.
The decision to pursue Vicario therefore represents a change in Juventus’ transfer strategy. The Italian giants can now secure a goalkeeper familiar with Serie A while keeping the option of a permanent deal.
Zion Suzuki transfer could affect Martinez
Aston Villa have agreed a reported £29.9 million (€35 million) deal with Parma for Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Juventus had also monitored Suzuki as they assessed their goalkeeping options.
Suzuki’s proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain previously stalled, which encouraged Villa to step up their pursuit of the Japan international. His potential arrival at Villa Park could have implications for Martinez’s position.
Despite the speculation, Martinez has not publicly indicated that he wants to leave Aston Villa. A representative of the goalkeeper told Sky Sports News on August 5 that he was happy at the club and looking forward to the new season.
Martinez future remains uncertain
Martinez remains under contract with Aston Villa until 2029. The World Cup-winning goalkeeper has attracted interest from several clubs, including Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester United.
According to his representative Gustavo Goñi, Martinez has never asked to leave Villa. Any potential transfer would therefore depend on Aston Villa’s approval and an agreement that satisfies all parties.
Juventus’ decision to pursue Vicario could reduce the immediate possibility of Martinez moving to Turin. His situation, however, could still change depending on Villa’s goalkeeping plans and developments in the transfer market.
What Vicario’s Juventus move means
Vicario’s arrival would give Juventus an experienced goalkeeper who already understands Italian football. His previous spell with Empoli helped establish his reputation before Tottenham brought him to England.
The loan arrangement also reduces Juventus’ immediate financial commitment. If Vicario performs well, the club can activate the £8.5 million purchase option and complete a permanent transfer.
For Tottenham, the deal could provide clarity over their goalkeeping hierarchy. Kinsky’s emergence means the club can now allow Vicario to pursue regular football elsewhere.
For Vicario, the move represents a return to Serie A and a fresh opportunity at a club competing at the highest level of Italian football.
