Lagos, Ogun declare August 20 public holiday for Isese Festival
The Lagos and Ogun state governments have declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Isese Day, an annual celebration observed by adherents of the Yoruba traditional religion. The announcements were made in separate statements issued by officials of both states.
In Lagos, Idris Aregbe, special adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on tourism, arts and culture, announced the holiday on Wednesday and described Isese Day as more than a public holiday, calling it a “living expression” of Yoruba spirituality and cultural heritage.
Aregbe said the declaration would give residents an opportunity to participate fully in the traditional celebration. He added that Isese represents an important part of Nigeria’s cultural and religious landscape, while emphasising Lagos’ position as a city where different cultural and religious traditions coexist.
According to Aregbe, Governor Sanwo-Olu has continued to support the preservation of indigenous values and religious inclusiveness under the state’s THEMES+ Agenda.
Ogun declares August 20 public holiday
In Ogun State, Kayode Akinmade, special adviser on information and strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, said Isese Day provides an opportunity for adherents of Yoruba traditional religion to honour their ancestors, observe traditional rites and promote cultural values.
Akinmade urged residents to celebrate peacefully and responsibly while respecting the beliefs, rights and practices of other people.
He recalled that August 20 was formally declared a public holiday in Ogun State in 2023 following a resolution by the Ogun State House of Assembly and approval by Governor Abiodun.
