Some music journeys begin in a recording studio. For D Wesley, it started much earlier, with a young boy putting his thoughts into songs at just eight years old.
Born Dein E.B. David-West, D Wesley is a Port Harcourt-based Nigerian music artist and songwriter from Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. What began as an early interest in songwriting has developed into a serious creative pursuit, with the artist continuing to build his own sound and artistic identity.
Beyond music, D Wesley holds a degree in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering from Rivers State University. His creative experience also includes working as a musical content writer for The Tide newspaper in Rivers State, adding another dimension to his connection with music, writing and storytelling.
Today, music remains at the centre of his creative direction, with D Wesley developing what he calls the AfroWestern sound.
A Love for Music That Started at Eight
For D Wesley, songwriting is not a recent discovery.
He began writing songs when he was just eight years old, giving him years to develop his ability to express ideas through words, melodies and music.
Growing up in Rivers State and later building his base in Port Harcourt, he continued developing his creativity while pursuing his education.
That combination of education and music has become an important part of his story. While studying engineering, D Wesley continued nurturing his songwriting and artistic abilities.
From Engineering to the Creative World
D Wesley‘s academic background is in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, a discipline far removed from the music studio.
He graduated from Rivers State University, but his passion for music and writing continued to shape his creative journey.
His experience as a former musical content writer for The Tide newspaper in Rivers State also gave him an opportunity to remain connected to the creative and entertainment space.
Writing about music and creating music may be different disciplines, but both require an understanding of words, ideas and storytelling-qualities that have remained important throughout D Wesley‘s journey.
The Sound He Calls AfroWestern
One of the defining elements of D Wesley‘s current musical direction is the sound he calls AfroWestern.
Rather than simply fitting into an existing musical category, the artist is working toward developing an identity that feels personal and recognisable.
For D Wesley, AfroWestern represents an opportunity to shape a sound that reflects his artistic personality while giving listeners something they can associate with his name.
The sound is still developing, but it has become an important part of his identity as an artist.

More Than the Music
D Wesley‘s story is not simply about releasing songs.
It is about a creative interest that began in childhood, continued alongside university studies and eventually developed into a broader artistic pursuit.
From writing songs at eight, to studying engineering at Rivers State University, to working as a musical content writer, and now developing the AfroWestern sound, each stage has added another layer to his journey.
The recent exchange with Ne-Yo adds another memorable chapter.
With “Mind Games” available for listeners, D Wesley is now entering another stage of his career, one where the music he creates, the opportunities that come his way and the audience he builds will help shape what comes next.
For an artist who started writing songs as a child, the journey is far from finished.
D Wesley is still writing the story, and this time, he is doing it through music.
