Ezri Konsa transfer: Arsenal agree £50m-plus deal with Aston Villa
Arsenal have agreed a deal worth more than £50 million to sign Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as the England international is expected to undergo a medical before completing his move to the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal reopened negotiations with Villa after previously failing to reach an agreement for the 28-year-old.
The Gunners had briefly turned their attention to Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah. However, they returned to Konsa and have now reached a deal with Villa.
Konsa set for Arsenal medical
Konsa joined Aston Villa from Brentford in July 2019 and has become an important part of the club’s defence. He has made 286 appearances for Villa across seven seasons.
The defender played 48 matches in all competitions last season. He scored twice and provided one assist as Villa won the Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League.
That fourth-place finish secured Champions League football for Villa in the 2026-27 campaign.
Konsa has not featured during Villa’s pre-season schedule. He was given four weeks off after representing England at the World Cup, however, he played in every match of England’s World Cup campaign as the Three Lions finished third.
Villa manager Unai Emery had previously explained that Konsa, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins would return to the squad after the team’s final warm-up match.
Why Arsenal wanted Ezri Konsa
Arsenal’s decision to revive their interest in Konsa comes after the club assessed several defensive options during the transfer window.
The defender’s Premier League experience is a major attraction. Konsa has also established himself at international level and offers Arsenal another experienced option in defence.
His arrival would strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad as Arsenal prepare for another Premier League and Champions League campaign.
Villa face major squad changes
Konsa’s departure would represent another significant change for Aston Villa.
The club have already lost several important players during the summer as they work to comply with Premier League and UEFA financial regulations.
Villa sold Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a club-record £117 million, Youri Tielemans also left for Manchester United, Lucas Digne departed for Paris Saint-Germain, with Atletico Madrid’s Matteo Ruggeri brought in as his replacement. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez could also leave before the transfer window closes.

Villa therefore face considerable uncertainty with the new season approaching. They begin their Premier League campaign away to Brighton, with the squad potentially undergoing major changes before the end of August.
Crucial period for Aston Villa
Villa’s recent success makes the scale of the changes particularly notable.
The club won the Europa League last season and secured Champions League qualification. Yet financial pressures have forced them to make difficult decisions in the transfer market. Captain John McGinn has insisted that the club still have the structures and values that helped them succeed, however, losing several key players in one window could significantly alter Emery’s squad.
The next two weeks will therefore be crucial for Villa as they attempt to rebuild while maintaining their competitive level.
For Arsenal, meanwhile, the proposed £50m-plus deal represents another major move as they strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
