Nollywood actor Gabriel Afolayan has shared his thoughts on the increasing recognition and success of Yoruba-language films, stating that the industry’s growth is the result of years of commitment and hard work by filmmakers, actors, and other creatives.
Speaking on the rising popularity of Yoruba movies, Gabriel Afolayan said he is not surprised by the attention the films are receiving, noting that industry professionals have consistently invested time and effort into producing quality content.
According to him, the positive reception from audiences is simply the reward for years of dedication.
“There is nothing strange about it because we have put in the work. If one works hard, one should reap the dividends. If we are seeing the feedback, it’s worth it. So there is nothing strange about it because we have put in the work,” he said.
The actor’s comments come at a time when Yoruba-language productions continue to gain wider acceptance both within Nigeria and among international audiences. Several indigenous films have recently earned praise for their storytelling, production quality, and cultural authenticity.
Beyond discussing the success of Yoruba cinema, Gabriel Afolayan also opened up about the meaning behind his popular nickname, “Gabbylucciii.”
Explaining the inspiration behind the name, he said, “Lucci means leader, Luciano, boss…someone at the top. And Gabby is coined from my name, Gabriel.”

Known for his versatility in both acting and music, Gabriel Afolayan emphasized that every role he takes on presents a new challenge and an opportunity to learn. He described himself as a student of the craft who continues to develop his skills with each project.
“All the roles stretch me. Maybe I don’t take things to heart too much. I see it for what it is and do it for what it should be. I am a student of the art, and I am still learning as well, so for me, everything is quite challenging.
Different roles have different landscapes of approach. The thoughts, the mindset, the research; they are always on different levels. So you can’t really say this is above the other. I put myself through everything I have to go through to achieve every role,” he said.
The actor further encouraged creatives to focus on their work rather than seeking validation from others. According to him, the audience ultimately determines whether a performance or project has been successful.
“Just love what you do, you can’t be scheming. Understand what you are supposed to do and do it. Let the audience give you the feedback. Yours is to get into the character, give it what it needs and let the audience feed you back on that,” he added.
Gabriel Afolayan comes from one of Nigeria’s most respected entertainment families. He is the son of the late filmmaker Adeyemi Afolayan, popularly known as Ade Love, and the younger brother of acclaimed filmmaker Kunle Afolayan.
A graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, Gabriel Afolayan has built a successful career spanning film and music. Over the years, he has earned recognition for his performances in movies such as Hoodrush, Aramotu, Coming from Insanity, and Citation.

As Yoruba-language films continue to attract larger audiences, Gabriel Afolayan believes the growing recognition is not a surprise but a well-deserved result of years of dedication by those committed to advancing the genre.
