Toke Makinwa has once again become the centre of public conversation after making candid remarks about relationships, financial expectations, and marriage during an appearance on the Mentality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Banky W.
The media personality shared her thoughts on transactional relationships, dating within one’s financial capacity, and why she believes women should be cautious about men who become wealthy after marriage.
Her comments have since generated widespread reactions, with many Nigerians debating whether her opinions reflect reality or reinforce stereotypes.
Relationships Have Always Been Transactional Says Toke Makinwa
During the discussion, Toke Makinwa argued that relationships between men and women have historically involved some form of exchange, insisting that the idea of transactional relationships did not begin with modern dating culture.
“From time immemorial, a relationship between a man and a woman has always been transactional, right from the garden of Eden, right from our parents’ days,” she said.
She explained that women have traditionally gone the extra mile to receive support or favour from their partners.
“You know, a woman will feel like she wants to ask her husband for something, she has to throw on the nicest underwear, make his best meal, rub him, like Esther, before she had to go before the king. Things have changed over the years, now social media is a bit extreme.”
According to her, today’s version of transactional dating has become more visible because of social media, but she believes the concept itself has existed for generations.
The television host also suggested that some men have contributed to the growing culture of transactional dating.
“The degree at which it is happening now, I would blame the men. Sometimes that’s all men have to offer.”
Speaking further about financial expectations in relationships, Toke Makinwa advised people to date within their means rather than trying to impress partners they cannot realistically support.
“I’m a big believer in dating within your wage, that way, there will not be stories that touch,” she said.
She continued by saying:
“You will have a good girl at home, a girl who will even make dinner with her own money when you don’t have. Yet, some men will still want to cheat on her with a woman they can’t afford.”

“Heaven forbid you end up with a guy who hasn’t blown. The day he blows, that is when you will know his true personality.”
She added that financial success does not transform a person’s character but simply makes it more visible.
“Money doesn’t change people; it just reveals who the person is. So many men are treating women who sacrificed everything for them badly.”
