The DJ and media personality DJ Cuppy has revealed that her experience with relationships has shaped her strong views on marriage, particularly when it comes to Nigerian men.
Speaking in a resurfaced interview, she said her last Nigerian partner appeared more focused on meeting her father than building a genuine connection with her.
“I can never marry a Nigerian. The last Nigerian I dated was already asking me when he could meet my dad. I don’t even think they actually like me,” she said.
Cuppy, the daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, explained that dating comes with added pressure because many people struggle to separate genuine interest from her family background and influence.
According to her, this makes it difficult to trust romantic intentions, especially when her last name carries significant social and financial weight.
She added that her father does not interfere with her choice of partners, only hoping she eventually settles down.
The resurfaced interview has also revived discussions around her past relationships, including her highly publicized engagement to British boxer Ryan Taylor, which ended in 2023 after a brief but widely followed romance.
Their breakup was followed by public exchanges online, with Taylor once responding to a post in which Cuppy suggested that some of her former partners could not afford her lifestyle. He replied, “Neither can you,” a comment that quickly gained attention on social media.
Before her relationship with Taylor, DJ Cuppy was linked to several public figures, including music executive Asa Asika and Nigerian footballer Victor Anichebe, though she has often kept details of those relationships relatively private.
She has since stated that she prefers to date outside celebrity circles, saying she is more comfortable with partners who live a low-key lifestyle and have regular careers, away from constant public attention.
Her relationship history also includes a widely discussed engagement to Ryan Taylor, which ended months after it was announced, adding to the public scrutiny that often follows her personal life.
DJ Cuppy’s sister, Temi Otedola, has also remained in the spotlight for her relationship with musician Mr Eazi, a pairing Cuppy has previously expressed happiness about.
As conversations around her comments continue online, the DJ’s statement has once again placed her personal life at the center of public debate, highlighting the challenges of dating under intense fame and family influence.
