Lagos Gets 360MW Electricity Boost as FG Upgrades Four Substations
Lagos has received a major boost to its electricity transmission capacity after the Federal Government upgraded four key substations across the state.
The projects have added about 360 megawatts (MW) of transmission capacity to the Lagos electricity network.
The upgraded substations are located in Ijora, Apapa Road, Alausa and Lekki. They are expected to strengthen power delivery to homes, businesses and industries served by Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies.
The projects are part of efforts to remove transmission bottlenecks and improve electricity supply across Lagos.
FG upgrades Lagos power infrastructure
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the projects would increase transmission capacity and improve electricity delivery to end users.
Speaking during the commissioning, Tegbe said some of the infrastructure had been in use for more than 25 years.
He explained that the installation of new transformers at the four substations would increase the amount of electricity the transmission network can deliver.
The upgrades are expected to support rising electricity demand across Lagos while improving the reliability of the transmission system.
Ijora substation gets 112MW boost
At the Ijora transmission substation, two new 100MVA transformers were installed.
The project increased the substation’s installed capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA. It also added about 112MW to the transmission network.
The additional capacity is expected to improve bulk electricity supply to areas connected to the Ijora network.
Apapa Road substation adds 96MW
The Apapa Road substation also received two new 60MVA transformers.
The project included the installation of modern gas-insulated switchgear. These upgrades increased the substation’s capacity from 60MVA to 180MVA.
The intervention added approximately 96MW of transmission capacity.
The additional capacity is expected to support electricity demand in Apapa and surrounding commercial and industrial areas.
Alausa substation capacity rises to 205MVA
At the Alausa substation, an existing 30MVA transformer was replaced with a 100MVA unit.
The upgrade increased total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA, adding about 56MW.
The additional capacity has also increased the power allocation to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company to 80MW.
According to the Minister of Power, the Alausa upgrade could provide electricity capacity for about 70,000 households, representing approximately 180,000 people.
Lekki substation gets major expansion
The Lekki transmission substation also received significant upgrades.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) commissioned two 60MVA transformers, one 300MVA transformer and nine additional 33kV feeders.
The project doubled transformation capacity at the 132/33kV level from 120MVA to 240MVA.

The Federal Government said the Lekki upgrade could benefit about 100,000 customers, representing an estimated 400,000 people.
The project is expected to support electricity demand from residential, commercial and industrial customers in the rapidly developing Lekki axis.
World Bank and JICA support projects
TCN Managing Director Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz said the Lagos transmission projects received support from the World Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Shanghai Electric was involved in executing the projects.
The latest upgrades are expected to strengthen Lagos’ electricity transmission infrastructure and improve the movement of available power to distribution networks.
However, increased transmission capacity does not automatically guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply. Actual supply to consumers will also depend on available generation and the capacity of distribution networks to deliver power to end users.
What the Lagos power upgrade means
The 360MW increase gives Lagos additional transmission capacity at a time when electricity demand continues to rise.
The upgrades at Ijora, Apapa Road, Alausa and Lekki could help reduce pressure on existing infrastructure and support better electricity delivery to homes and businesses.
For consumers, the key benefit will be the potential for more reliable power supply as generation, transmission and distribution capacity improve across the electricity value chain.
