Ghana have moved level with the record held by the Nigeria’s World Cup record after securing a dramatic late win over Panama in their opening Group L fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada.
Ghana national football team edged past Panama national football team 1-0 at the Toronto Stadium, with Caleb Yirenkyi scoring a stoppage-time winner in the 95th minute to seal all three points for the Black Stars.
The decisive moment came deep into added time after Brandon Thomas-Asante broke down the left wing, outpaced his marker, and delivered a low cross into the box.
Yirenkyi reacted quickest, tapping home from close range to secure a hard-fought victory and deny Panama a historic first World Cup point.
The result lifted Ghana to the top of Group L alongside England after the opening round of matches, but more significantly, it brought them level with Nigeria in the all-time African World Cup win standings.
Nigeria national football team have long held a benchmark of six World Cup victories from 21 matches since their debut in 1994. Ghana’s latest win now places them on the same tally, achieved in fewer appearances, with six wins from 16 World Cup matches.
The development adds fresh context to Africa’s football rivalry, especially with Nigeria absent from the 2026 tournament. With the Super Eagles missing back-to-back editions, their long-standing record has become increasingly vulnerable.
Football analysts have noted that Ghana’s efficiency at the global stage strengthens their claim among Africa’s most consistent World Cup performers, particularly given their historic runs in 2006 and 2010.
In Germany 2006, the Black Stars reached the round of 16 in their debut appearance, before going one better in South Africa 2010, where they advanced to the quarter-finals in one of the continent’s most memorable campaigns.
Across Africa, other nations remain close to Nigeria’s tally. Cameroon national football team sit just behind with five World Cup wins from 26 matches, while Morocco national football team also have five victories and remain active contenders in the 2026 edition after their historic semi-final run in Qatar 2022.
Senegal national football team also maintain an impressive record, boasting five wins from only 13 World Cup matches since their debut in 2002, including their famous quarter-final run in Korea/Japan.
Elsewhere, England national football team continue to be one of Ghana’s key rivals in Group L after also opening their campaign with a win, setting up a potentially decisive clash in the next round of fixtures.
