Wike Goes on Vacation After 30 Days of FCT Project Commissioning
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken a break from his busy schedule after spending more than 30 days commissioning completed projects, flagging off new developments and inspecting ongoing infrastructure across Abuja.
Wike’s vacation was disclosed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, in a post on X on Monday.
According to Olayinka, the FCT minister used the extended period to oversee a series of infrastructure activities while also reviewing projects expected to be ready for commissioning later in 2026 and into 2027.
Wike takes break after busy project schedule
The minister’s vacation comes after an intense period of activity across the Federal Capital Territory.
During the period, Wike participated in the commissioning of completed infrastructure projects while also inspecting ongoing developments across different parts of Abuja.
Olayinka said the minister had spent more than 30 consecutive days involved in commissioning projects, launching new ones and monitoring works that are still under construction.
Consequently, the minister has now stepped away temporarily to take a break after the lengthy project schedule.
More projects lined up for Abuja
Despite going on vacation, Wike’s infrastructure programme in the FCT is expected to continue.
According to Olayinka’s account, the minister also reviewed projects scheduled for commissioning in December 2026 and January 2027.
This means several major developments currently under construction are expected to remain on the FCT Administration’s agenda in the coming months.
Earlier in 2026, the FCT Administration announced plans to commission more than 30 projects as part of activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The projects included major roads and other infrastructure developments across the capital.
Wike’s infrastructure push in the FCT
Since becoming FCT minister, Wike has placed considerable emphasis on infrastructure development in Abuja.
His administration has overseen projects involving roads, interchanges, public facilities and other infrastructure intended to improve transportation and urban development within the nation’s capital.
Among projects inspected and commissioned during the broader infrastructure drive were the Gwarinpa-Jahi Interchange, Airport-Kuje Road, Kuje-Gwagwalada Road and sections of the Outer Southern Expressway.
The FCT Administration has also continued to inspect projects before commissioning, with Wike repeatedly stressing the importance of ensuring that completed works meet expected standards.
Tinubu administration backs FCT development drive
The infrastructure programme has also attracted commendation from President Bola Tinubu.
In July, Tinubu praised Wike’s work in the FCT, particularly the completion of road projects that had previously remained unfinished.
The president described the minister’s approach as helping to address the problem of abandoned infrastructure projects in Abuja.
The commissioning programme has therefore become an important part of the federal government’s broader presentation of infrastructure delivery under the Renewed Hope administration.
Wike remains FCT minister
Nyesom Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, was appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory by President Tinubu in August 2023.
He remains the serving FCT minister, according to the official State House cabinet listing.
Before his appointment to the federal cabinet, Wike served as governor of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023.
His current role places him at the centre of the administration of Nigeria’s capital territory, including oversight of major urban infrastructure projects.
What happens while Wike is away?
Although the minister is currently on vacation, ongoing FCT projects are expected to continue under the supervision of the relevant departments and agencies.
Furthermore, projects already scheduled for completion and commissioning will remain on the administration’s programme.
With additional infrastructure reportedly targeted for commissioning towards the end of 2026 and early 2027, Wike is expected to return to a busy schedule when his vacation ends.
For now, the FCT minister is taking a temporary break after more than a month of intensive project commissioning and inspection activities across Abuja.
