Samson Adamu Makes History as First Nigerian to Become CAF General Secretary
Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
His appointment makes him the first Nigerian to hold the position in CAF’s 70-year history.
The announcement was made on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has since congratulated Adamu on the appointment.
The NFF’s acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, described the development as a major achievement for Nigerian football administration.
He also expressed confidence in Adamu’s ability to succeed in the role and represent Nigeria and Africa well.
“This is, indeed, very good news. I am so happy for Samson Adamu on his confirmation, and I know he is going to make Nigeria and Africa proud,” Ikpeme said.
He added that the NFF would support Adamu in his new position as a member association under CAF.
Adamu’s Journey Through CAF
Adamu has held several important positions within CAF before his confirmation as General Secretary.
He joined the organisation, which is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, as Director of Competitions. He later became Director of Tournaments and Events.

On March 29, he was appointed acting General Secretary following the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, a Swiss-Congolese football administrator.
His confirmation now makes the appointment permanent.
Football Administration Career and Qualifications
Adamu holds a FIFA Master’s degree in the Management, Law and Humanities of Sport.
He began his career in football administration in the early 2010s. One of his early projects was the establishment of Copa Lagos, a beach soccer tournament that has since been discontinued.
His appointment marks a significant moment for Nigeria’s presence in African football administration.
With his new role, Adamu will take on a key administrative position within the continent’s football governing body.
