Oregon School Shooting: Teen Gunman Kills Three Children and Teacher
A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left three children and a teacher dead, according to CNN’s report published on October 16, 2026. The victims were aged 5, 8 and 11.
Another child and a teacher were taken to hospital with critical injuries following the attack on Thursday, October 15.
Police said the suspected gunman, a 16-year-old resident of Bend, was shot dead by a community member who pursued him into the school. Authorities have not yet established the motive for the shooting.
Police Reveal Details of School Attack
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the suspect forced his way into the school by shooting at locked doors. However, investigators have not confirmed how far he entered the building.
Emergency dispatch audio initially suggested that the person who shot the suspect might have been a pupil’s father. However, police have described the individual only as a community member and have not confirmed their relationship with the school.
Meanwhile, authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Teacher Describes Pupils’ Fear
Kathy Sheil Smith, a fifth-grade teacher at Silver Rail Elementary, recalled seeing the gunman approaching the school with a long gun.
Speaking to CNN affiliate KPTV, she said she alerted the school’s main office after seeing the suspect through her classroom window. She then moved her pupils into a corner of the classroom to protect them.

Smith said the children were terrified as the incident unfolded. Some prayed, while others tried to comfort their classmates.
She also described the fear teachers experienced as they tried to keep their pupils safe. Smith credited the community member who confronted the suspect with helping to prevent further loss of life.
Oregon School District Closes Schools
Following the shooting, Bend-La Pine Schools announced that all schools in the district would close on Friday, October 16. The closure also covers school activities and sporting events.
Superintendent Steven Cook said crisis counsellors from across the region would be available to support pupils, families, school employees and other members of the community.
Police are also expected to maintain a significant presence around the school in the coming days as investigators continue their work.
School Security Measures Under Scrutiny
The school district has previously outlined several security measures across its campuses. These include secure entrance vestibules, visitor screening systems, identification checks and security cameras.
The district also began upgrading classroom door locks in 2022. The new systems were designed to allow people inside classrooms to lock doors quickly during an emergency.
Despite these measures, police said the suspect forced entry by firing at locked doors. Investigators have yet to provide further details about how the security systems were breached.
Community Mourns Victims
Residents gathered at Drake Park in Bend on Thursday evening for a candlelight vigil to honour the victims and support those affected by the shooting.
Photographs from the gathering showed mourners holding candles, embracing one another and listening to prayers and messages from community leaders.
The attack also prompted condolences from officials across the United States. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said she was heartbroken by the shooting, while several elected officials renewed calls for action to address gun violence.
Bend, a city in central Oregon known for its outdoor recreation and access to hiking and biking trails, has generally been regarded as a relatively safe community. However, the latest attack has renewed concerns about school safety and gun violence.
Shooting Adds to US School Gun Violence Cases
CNN’s data analysis identified the incident as the 36th shooting on K-12 school grounds in the United States in 2026.
The figure highlights the continuing challenge of preventing gun violence at schools. However, the classification and scope of school-shooting databases can vary, so the figure should be understood in the context of CNN’s methodology.
Authorities have not announced a motive for the Oregon attack. Further information is expected as the investigation continues.
