Nigeria international Ademola Lookman scored as Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, October 13, increasing the pressure on United manager Michael Carrick.
Atletico made a flying start in Madrid, with Pablo Barrios opening the scoring inside the first minute. Manchester United struggled to find an equaliser, and defender Leny Yoro’s second-half red card made their task even harder.
Lookman then sealed the victory in the 79th minute, helping Diego Simeone’s side secure their first points of the Champions League league phase after losing their opening match against Liverpool.
Barrios Gives Atletico an Early Lead
Atletico needed less than a minute to take control of the contest at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Alex Baena broke through Manchester United’s defence before delivering a pass across the box for Barrios. The midfielder’s effort crossed the line despite Ayden Heaven’s attempt to prevent the goal.
United tried to respond, with Bryan Mbeumo going close after working the ball through Cristian Romero’s legs. However, his shot narrowly missed the target.
At the other end, Alejandro Grimaldo nearly doubled Atletico’s advantage with a free-kick that struck the junction between the post and crossbar.
Atletico appeared to score again before the break when Johnny Cardoso found the net from the edge of the penalty area. However, a VAR review ruled out the goal after the ball struck Marcos Llorente’s hand during the build-up.
Manchester United Fight Back but Fail to Equalise
United showed greater attacking intent after the interval as they searched for a way back into the match.
Julian Alvarez came close to extending Atletico’s lead, but his effort struck the post. United then created opportunities of their own, with captain Bruno Fernandes narrowly missing with a lob before hitting the crossbar following a corner routine.
Carrick had handed Carlos Baleba his first start for the club after his summer arrival from Brighton. He also deployed Fernandes on the right, but United could not turn their spells of pressure into a goal.
Their hopes suffered another setback when Yoro was sent off following a VAR review. The defender was judged to have brought down Jonathan David as the last man, leaving United with 10 players.
Lookman Seals Atletico Madrid’s Victory
Atletico capitalised on their numerical advantage to secure the win.
David initially saw his effort saved by Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Lookman, however, reacted quickly to the rebound and finished to make it 2-0 in the 79th minute.
The goal capped an important night for the Nigerian forward, whose contribution helped Atletico put the match beyond United’s reach.

Manchester United goalkeeper Jan Oblak later denied substitute Matheus Cunha, while Atletico remained in control during the closing stages.
Carrick also withdrew Fernandes as United looked ahead to their upcoming league fixture against rivals Leeds.
Pressure Mounts on Michael Carrick
The defeat added to Manchester United’s difficult run, with the club reportedly winless in five matches across all competitions. Their domestic struggles have increased scrutiny of Carrick’s leadership.
United’s slow start in Madrid, missed chances and Yoro’s dismissal all contributed to another frustrating result.
Atletico, meanwhile, bounced back from their opening defeat against Liverpool to collect their first points in the Champions League league phase.
Simeone’s team will take confidence from the victory, while United must improve their defensive organisation and finishing if they are to regain momentum in Europe and the domestic competition.
