Barcelona Thrash Real Betis 5-2 to Extend Perfect Start in La Liga
Barcelona continued their impressive run under Hansi Flick after beating Real Betis 5-2 on Saturday to strengthen their position at the top of the La Liga table.
The Spanish champions produced another attacking masterclass at La Cartuja Stadium in Seville on October 17, 2026. Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Gabriel Jesus, Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo scored as Barcelona secured their 11th consecutive victory across all competitions.
However, the win was not entirely comfortable. Real Betis threatened Barcelona’s defence on several occasions before Facundo Bernal received a red card early in the second half for a confrontation involving Yamal.
The result kept Barcelona five points clear of Atletico Madrid, who secured a late 1-0 victory over Espanyol. Meanwhile, Real Betis remained eight points behind the league leaders.
Lamine Yamal Opens Scoring With Brilliant Goal
Barcelona took the lead in the 10th minute through a stunning effort from teenage winger Lamine Yamal.
The 19-year-old showed excellent close control on the edge of the penalty area before creating space and curling the ball into the top corner.
His strike set the tone for an entertaining encounter and further demonstrated his growing influence in Barcelona’s attack.
Speaking after the match, Rodri praised Yamal’s ability to produce decisive moments. He also highlighted the winger’s work rate, movement and willingness to contribute to the team beyond scoring goals.
Real Betis, however, refused to surrender easily despite missing several key players, including midfielder Isco, who was rested ahead of their upcoming European fixture.
Real Betis Exploit Barcelona’s Defensive Weaknesses
Despite Barcelona’s attacking quality, defensive problems once again became apparent under Flick.
Real Betis equalised before the half-hour mark after Pablo Fornals delivered a cross into the penalty area. Valentin Gomez got ahead of Barcelona defender Xavi Espart and headed the ball into the net.
Barcelona responded through Rodri, who restored their lead with a header from a corner.
Betis thought they had levelled the score again when Giovani Lo Celso scored from distance. However, the goal was disallowed after officials identified an earlier handball by Cucho Hernandez in the build-up.
The decision frustrated the home side, but Barcelona maintained their advantage heading into the decisive stages of the match.
Barcelona Capitalise on Bernal’s Red Card
Barcelona extended their lead six minutes into the second half when Gabriel Jesus finished off a cut-back from Yamal.
Jesus had earlier seen another effort ruled out for offside. Nevertheless, his second-half goal gave the visitors greater control of the contest.
Real Betis quickly responded through Ez Abde, reducing the deficit and raising hopes of a comeback.
Their task became more difficult moments later when Bernal was sent off for a headbutt involving Yamal. The Barcelona winger also received a yellow card for his involvement in the confrontation.
With Betis reduced to 10 players, Barcelona found more opportunities to attack and eventually increased their advantage.
Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo Seal Barcelona’s Victory
Barcelona scored their fourth goal after Pau Cubarsi directed the ball across the penalty area, allowing Eric Garcia to finish from close range.
The strike continued the visitors’ remarkable scoring form under Flick. According to the supplied report, Barcelona had scored at least four goals in eight matches during the season.
Flick later introduced Raphinha, who had missed the previous two matches through injury, while Yamal was substituted to reduce the risk of another booking ahead of next weekend’s Clasico.

Dani Olmo then completed the scoring with a composed finish from the edge of the penalty area as Barcelona secured an emphatic 5-2 victory.
The result extended the club’s perfect start across all competitions to 11 wins from 11 matches. Barcelona also set a new club record for victories at the start of a league campaign, matching the all-time record of nine consecutive league wins at the beginning of a season.
Barcelona Turn Attention to Paris Saint-Germain
Following their domestic success, Barcelona must now prepare for a demanding European assignment against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
The match against the reigning European champions is expected to provide a major test of Flick’s side, particularly given the defensive vulnerabilities exposed by Real Betis.
Although Barcelona’s attacking performances continue to impress, their ability to limit opposition chances could prove decisive in the Champions League.
For Real Betis, the defeat was disappointing, but defender Hector Bellerin praised his teammates for competing against one of Europe’s strongest attacking sides.
Bellerin also expressed frustration over what he considered questionable decisions during the match. However, he maintained that Betis had demonstrated their ability to challenge top opponents while playing with a full team.
Barcelona will hope to carry their impressive scoring form into Europe while addressing the defensive lapses that continue to offer opponents opportunities.
