Nigerian music star Burna Boy has achieved a historic African Spotify record after becoming the first artist from the continent to reach 47.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
The latest milestone comes after the explosive success of Dai Dai, his official 2026 FIFA World Cup anthem recorded alongside Colombian singer Shakira.
The achievement sees Burna Boy move ahead of South African singer Tyla, who previously held the record with 46.58 million monthly listeners in December 2025.
The new figure also puts Burna Boy on track to become the first African artist to surpass the 50 million monthly listener mark on Spotify.
According to Spotify data, Burna Boy’s rapid rise has been largely powered by the global popularity of Dai Dai, which reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart on June 30.
Dai Dai Fuels Burna Boy’s Historic Streaming Rise
Released on May 15 as the official anthem of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Dai Dai has generated more than 123 million streams on Spotify alone within weeks of its release.
The multilingual track was written in English, Spanish, Italian, French and Japanese, blending Shakira’s global pop sound with Burna Boy’s Afrobeats style. The song also features songwriting contributions from Ed Sheeran, Jon Bellion and other notable writers.
Burna Boy and Shakira first performed Dai Dai live during the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony on June 11. The song has since become part of Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour setlist during the North American leg, helping it gain even more international attention.
Its official music video has also contributed to its success, featuring appearances by football stars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland.
The chart-topping performance of Dai Dai also marked another significant achievement for Burna Boy. He became the first African artist to top Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart since Wizkid appeared at the summit through his collaboration with Drake on One Dance in 2016.
Burna Boy Eyes Another Spotify Milestone
With 47.4 million monthly listeners already recorded, Burna Boy is now within touching distance of becoming the first African artist to cross the 50 million monthly listener milestone on Spotify.
The latest African Spotify record adds to an already remarkable list of streaming achievements for the Grammy-winning artist.
In 2025, Burna Boy recorded 1.986 billion Spotify streams across the calendar year, setting the highest annual streaming total ever achieved by an African artist.
The figure placed him ahead of fellow African stars Wizkid, who recorded 1.81 billion streams, and Tyla, who finished with 1.67 billion.

He also remains the first African artist to have two studio albums individually exceed one billion streams on Spotify, highlighting his continued global appeal.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup continuing until July 19 and the final scheduled for MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Dai Dai is expected to remain one of the tournament’s biggest musical highlights.
If its current momentum continues, Burna Boy could soon extend his African Spotify record even further and become the first artist from the continent to reach the 50 million monthly listener milestone.
