President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming and upgrade of the Kaduna Petroleum Institute, converting the facility into a specialised federal university dedicated to engineering and geological sciences.
The announcement was made during the President’s nationwide broadcast to commemorate Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration on Friday, June 12.
According to Tinubu, the institution will now be known as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.
The decision marks a major step in the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen specialised education while honouring one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Why Tinubu Renamed the Kaduna Petroleum Institute
President Tinubu said the renaming of the Kaduna Petroleum Institute was intended to recognise the enduring legacy of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, whom he described as one of the architects of modern democratic Nigeria.
“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” the President said during his Democracy Day address.
“In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.”
General Yar’Adua served as Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, under the military administration of former Head of State Olusegun Obasanjo between 1976 and 1979.
Following his military career, he became a leading political figure and a strong advocate for democratic governance.
He played an active role in the struggle for the validation of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and remained a vocal opponent of military rule.
Yar’Adua later died in prison in December 1997 while detained under the regime of former military ruler Sani Abacha.
His younger brother, the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, later served as Nigeria’s president from 2007 to 2010.

New University Expected to Boost Engineering Education
Beyond the symbolic significance of the renaming, the transformation of the Kaduna Petroleum Institute into a federal university is expected to expand educational opportunities in critical sectors of the Nigerian economy.
The institution will focus on advanced training in engineering, geological sciences, mineral resources, and related technological disciplines. Government officials believe the specialised university will help address the growing demand for highly skilled professionals in Nigeria’s energy, mining, and construction industries.
The upgrade is also expected to stimulate economic activity in Kaduna State through increased infrastructure development, research opportunities, and federal investment.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that specialised institutions play an important role in preparing graduates for emerging opportunities in technical and industrial sectors.
The Federal Ministry of Education is expected to provide additional information regarding the university’s academic structure, admission processes, and operational framework in the coming weeks.
With the conversion of the Kaduna Petroleum Institute into the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, the Federal Government aims to preserve the legacy of a prominent democracy advocate while strengthening Nigeria’s capacity in engineering and scientific education.
