Mayorkun’s mother, veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Adewale, has shared details of how she and her son initially believed Nigerian music superstar Davido was a scammer when he first reached out to the singer through social media.
Speaking during a recent interview, Adewale recalled the events that followed after Mayorkun’s cover of Davido’s song The Money gained attention online. According to her, neither she nor her son believed the direct message allegedly sent by Davido was genuine.
The actress explained that the family suspected someone was impersonating the award-winning singer in an attempt to deceive Mayorkun. However, their doubts were erased when Davido personally called the aspiring artist and expressed admiration for his musical talent.
“After the cover he did went viral, he was with his brother when Davido sent a message, but we thought it was a scammer. Davido later said he would call. I was there when Davido called him, and he was so excited he almost went crazy,” she said.
According to Adewale, the phone conversation marked the beginning of a life-changing relationship between the two musicians. She revealed that Davido informed Mayorkun that he enjoyed the cover version and promised to meet him after returning to town.
“When he called, Davido told him he liked the cover. He also said he was not in town but would return the following week, and that Mayorkun should send his measurements,” she added.
Upon his return, Davido reportedly invited Mayorkun and his brother for a meeting. During the visit, he gifted them money and several items, a gesture that further reassured the family of his sincerity.
“At the time, I was scared because I did not know who Davido was. The next day, they went back, and that was when they recorded ‘Eleko’,” Adewale recalled.
The actress noted that recording the song came naturally to her son because of his passion for writing and his background in church music.
“It was easy for Mayorkun because he had always loved writing poetry and had been in the choir,” she said.
Following the recording of Eleko, Mayorkun and his brother reportedly moved into Davido’s residence, where the singer continued to mentor him. Adewale described Davido as respectful and welcoming when she later visited to see where her son was staying.
“After some time, I went to see where they were staying, and when I got there, Davido was very pleasant and respectful,” she stated.
The revelation offers fresh insight into the beginnings of Mayorkun’s rise to fame. The singer eventually signed with Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) in 2016 and quickly became one of the label’s standout stars.

Over the years, Mayorkun built a successful music career, earning multiple awards, including the prestigious Next Rated award at The Headies 2018.
The University of Lagos Accounting graduate later left DMW in 2021 and continued his career under Sony Music West Africa.
Since then, he has released several successful projects, including Back In Office and his 2025 album, Still The Mayor, cementing his place among Nigeria’s leading music stars.
The story shared by Mayorkun’s mother highlights how a moment that was initially dismissed as a possible scam eventually became the turning point that transformed her son’s career and introduced him to nationwide fame.
