A tragic incident in Plateau State has led to the death of a Northern traditional ruler, Godwin Vonga, who was killed by suspected gunmen along the Timshat–Mabudi Road in Langtang South Local Government Area.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday, has thrown the Timshat community into mourning and renewed fears over worsening insecurity in rural parts of the state.

The victim was reportedly attacked while returning home after dropping his children off at school in Mabudi.

Community leaders and local authorities have condemned the killing, calling for urgent justice and improved security response.
According to local accounts, the late traditional ruler had earlier served as a councillor for Nasarawa Ward before becoming a respected leader in Timshat. Residents said the sudden attack has left the community in shock, describing him as a peaceful and well-known figure in the area.
A community member, Nanbol Pirfa, said the incident has deeply shaken residents, noting that the motive behind the killing remains unclear. “He was widely respected for his service and leadership,” Pirfa said, expressing concern over the rising wave of violence in the region.

The chairman of Langtang South Local Government Area, Nanfa Nbin, strongly condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable and barbaric. Through his spokesperson, Butko Iliya, he assured residents that efforts were underway to track down those responsible.
“Those responsible for this killing will be identified and brought to justice,” the statement read, as authorities urged residents to support security agencies with credible information.
The killing of the Northern traditional ruler adds to a growing list of violent incidents in Plateau State, where several rural communities have recently suffered coordinated attacks. Security agencies say investigations are ongoing, with increased deployment aimed at restoring calm and preventing further violence.
As tension continues to rise, residents of Timshat and surrounding communities are calling for stronger protection and lasting solutions to the persistent insecurity affecting the region.
