Millions of Apple users worldwide could be affected after WhatsApp confirmed that it will stop supporting older versions of Apple’s operating system from November 30, 2026.
The change will apply to both the standard WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business, requiring users to run iOS 15.5 or newer to continue accessing the platform.
The update is expected to impact owners of older iPhones and iPads currently operating on iOS versions 15.0 through 15.4. Users who fail to update their devices before the deadline may lose access to the messaging service.
WhatsApp has already begun notifying affected users through in-app alerts, encouraging them to upgrade their software well before support officially ends.
Older iPhones and iPads Must Be Updated
According to information released by the company, devices running iOS versions earlier than 15.5 will no longer be compatible with WhatsApp after November 30, 2026.
This means users with devices operating on iOS 15.0, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, or 15.4 will need to install a newer software update to continue using the app without interruption.
The policy also extends to WhatsApp Business users, as both applications rely on the same technology framework and system requirements.
To remain connected, affected users can check for available updates by opening the Settings app on their iPhone, selecting General, and then tapping Software Update. If a newer version is available, installing it before the deadline will ensure uninterrupted access to the platform.
Industry analysts note that most users will not need to purchase a new device because iOS 15.5 is only a minor software update. Many iPhones already running iOS 15 are capable of upgrading to newer supported versions.
WhatsApp Focuses on Security and Future Features
The decision reflects WhatsApp’s broader strategy of focusing on modern operating systems that can support advanced security protections and upcoming features.
The company explained that maintaining compatibility with older software requires significant technical resources and can slow the development of new tools. As newer features increasingly depend on technologies available only in updated operating systems, continuing support for ageing software has become more challenging.
By concentrating on newer iOS versions, WhatsApp believes it can deliver better performance, stronger security, and improved reliability for the majority of its users.

The announcement is particularly important for businesses that rely on WhatsApp Business for customer communication, sales, and support services. Small business owners have been advised to update their devices early to avoid disruptions that could affect daily operations.
The company also hinted that some Android smartphones may face similar support changes in the future as it continues shifting its focus toward newer operating systems.
For now, Apple users are encouraged to verify their software version and install any available updates ahead of the November 30, 2026 deadline to ensure continued access to WhatsApp and its services.
