Former Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup champion Ronaldinho is preparing for a sensational return to football at the age of 46, according to reports from Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, with a proposed move to Italian side Ravenna in the third division.
The report claims that Ronaldinho was expected to sign the deal in Miami earlier this week, with the Brazilian already in the United States.
However, while excitement has grown around the announcement, club officials have hinted that the move may be more symbolic than competitive.
A source close to the deal, speaking to AFP, confirmed that discussions were ongoing, adding weight to speculation that one of football’s most gifted playmakers could once again be registered as an active player.
“I can’t wait to get back dancing with the ball again and to write a new story with Ignazio Cipriani and his entire family,” Ronaldinho was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Football has always been a source of joy for me. I want to bring the same spirit to Ravenna,” the former Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona star added, reinforcing the emotional tone behind his reported comeback.
Despite the buzz, Ravenna vice-president Ariedo Braida downplayed expectations about an actual return to competitive action. He suggested the move was more about visibility and marketing impact than squad reinforcement.
“He’s a magical player, who will have his registration, that’s a huge coup for us,” Braida told Italian media.
“Will he play at 46? That depends, but he’ll be registered,” he added, leaving open the possibility that Ronaldinho may not feature on the pitch.
Ronaldinho last played professionally in 2015 during a short spell with Brazilian club Fluminense FC, bringing an end to a glittering career that included a FIFA World Cup triumph and a Ballon d’Or win.
The former Barcelona playmaker remains one of football’s most iconic figures, known for his flair, creativity, and trademark smile.

His reported return, even in a limited or ceremonial capacity, has already sparked global attention across the football world.
While uncertainty remains over whether he will actually step onto the pitch for Ravenna, the mere possibility of Ronaldinho returning to professional football at 46 has reignited excitement among fans worldwide.
