Mexico’s joyful World Cup celebrations in Mexico City ended in tragedy on Wednesday after at least two people died during the large-scale festivities that followed the country’s victory over Ecuador in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to local authorities, a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from asphyxiation as huge crowds gathered across the Mexican capital to celebrate the national team’s qualification for the Round of 16.
The city’s health ministry confirmed the two fatalities. Meanwhile, authorities said they have not verified reports from local media claiming that a third person also died during the celebrations.
The celebrations erupted after Mexico secured a memorable victory over Ecuador, recording the country’s first knockout-stage win at a FIFA World Cup since 1986.
The result sent the tournament co-hosts into the Round of 16, sparking emotional scenes among supporters across the nation.
An estimated one million people poured into the streets of Mexico City, with the largest crowds gathering around the iconic Angel of Independence monument, according to estimates released by the city government.
Fans waved Mexican flags, sang national songs, and celebrated late into the night as the capital became the centre of nationwide celebrations. However, the overwhelming number of people also created dangerous conditions in several areas, leading to the fatal incidents.
The health ministry said the victims died from asphyxiation during the crowded celebrations but did not immediately provide additional details about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Officials are continuing to monitor the situation and have yet to confirm reports suggesting another fatality.
Mexico’s victory over Ecuador marked one of the country’s biggest World Cup achievements in four decades. The win ended a long wait for a knockout-stage triumph and strengthened hopes of an extended run in the 2026 tournament, which Mexico is co-hosting alongside the United States and Canada.
