Nigeria’s leading music recognition platform, The Headies Awards, will stage its 18th edition in Toronto, Canada, marking a historic shift as the ceremony celebrates its 20th anniversary since inception in 2006.
The announcement was made during a formal unveiling held on June 15, 2026, at the Grand Ballroom of Eko Hotel, Lagos, in collaboration with partners including the Canadian Embassy and key stakeholders in the entertainment industry.
The upcoming edition is scheduled for later in 2026, with nomination submissions expected to open in the coming weeks.
Organisers confirmed that this move represents the third time the awards will be held outside Nigeria, following previous editions hosted in Atlanta, United States.
According to the organisers, the relocation reflects the growing international recognition of Nigerian music and the expanding influence of its global fanbase.
Toronto Hosts as Headies Expands Global Reach
Speaking at the unveiling, Ayo Animashaun, CEO of Smooth Promotions and founder of Hip TV, explained that the decision to host the 18th edition in Toronto was intentional and strategic.

He noted that Canada was chosen due to its strong Nigerian diaspora community and its increasing role in supporting Afrobeats and African entertainment on the global stage.
Animashaun described the upcoming anniversary as a major milestone, highlighting the awards’ “resilience, consistency, and commitment” to celebrating excellence in Nigerian music for two decades despite various industry challenges.
He stated that the Headies has evolved from its original identity as the Hip Hop World Awards in 2006 into one of Africa’s most respected music award platforms.
Partnerships, Summit, and Industry Development Initiatives
As part of the expanded 18th edition, the organisers also announced a Creative and Business Summit to be held in Canada alongside the main awards ceremony.
The summit is expected to bring together stakeholders across government, entertainment, and business sectors to discuss collaboration, industry growth, and sustainable creative infrastructure.
The Canadian diplomatic community also welcomed the development. Carlos Rojas-Arbulu, Deputy High Commissioner of Canada, described the partnership as a reflection of the strong cultural bridge between Nigeria and Canada, noting the rising global impact of Nigerian music.
In addition, travel and logistics support for attendees will be handled in partnership with Wakanow, aimed at easing flight bookings, accommodation, and travel arrangements for guests attending the event in Toronto.

Industry stakeholders including representatives from MTN Nigeria and Omnicom Media Group also participated in panel discussions at the unveiling ceremony, focusing on improving investment, trust, and infrastructure within the creative industry.
As anticipation builds, organisers say further details on nominees and event schedules will be released soon, with expectations high for one of the most globally significant editions of The Headies Awards yet.
