Apple Music has unveiled Nigerian singer-songwriter EKENE as its Africa Rising cover star for July 2026, marking another milestone in the streaming platform’s commitment to showcasing emerging African talent.
The recognition places EKENE among a growing list of promising artists whose music is making an impact across the continent and beyond.
The monthly Africa Rising programme highlights artists considered to be shaping the future of African music by giving them greater visibility through editorial playlists, interviews and exclusive content.

EKENE’s selection comes as his latest body of work, Little Us, continues to attract attention for its heartfelt storytelling and unique sound.
EKENE’s Little Us Reflects Identity, Faith and Personal Growth
Known for blending soulful melodies with introspective songwriting, EKENE has steadily built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most exciting voices in the alt-pop space.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, his music leans into textured R&B influences rather than mainstream Afrobeats, creating a sound that feels both intimate and distinctive.
His debut single, Lullaby, introduced listeners to an artist unafraid to embrace vulnerability, while Little Us expands on that approach with an emotional exploration of identity, repression and healing.
The project takes the form of a conversation between EKENE and his younger self, reflecting on life in a strict religious Nigerian household and the emotional journey of navigating family expectations, faith and self-discovery.
Through its reflective themes, Little Us encourages listeners to revisit their own experiences, question long-held beliefs and find compassion for the younger versions of themselves. The project balances emotional weight with hope, making it one of EKENE’s most personal releases to date.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the project, EKENE said:
“This project is really me trying to stay in touch with my younger self. I am understanding him, forgiving him, and saying the things I didn’t know how to say back then. I just want people to hear it and feel seen.”
Apple Music Recognition Opens New Opportunities
Reacting to his selection as the Africa Rising cover star for July, EKENE expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent a new generation of African musicians making their mark globally.
“I am so grateful to, in some way, represent the amazing voices of my generation coming out of Africa, and doing so as a new artist makes this all the more special to me. I’m super thankful for the opportunity.”
As part of the recognition, EKENE will receive prominent placement across Apple Music’s Africa Rising playlist throughout July. He is also scheduled to join Ebro Darden for an interview on Apple Music 1, where he will discuss his creative journey and artistic influences.
In addition, the singer-songwriter will appear on Africa Now Radio with host Nandi Madida, offering listeners further insight into the experiences that shaped Little Us and the evolution of his music.

The recognition further strengthens EKENE’s growing profile within Africa’s alternative music scene. With emotionally honest songwriting, genre-defying production and a willingness to tackle deeply personal subjects, the singer continues to establish himself as one of Nigeria’s most promising emerging artists.
For Apple Music, the July selection reinforces the purpose of the Africa Rising initiative, giving talented African musicians a global platform while introducing audiences to fresh voices redefining the continent’s musical landscape.
