The United States Mission in Nigeria has provided fresh guidance on What Nigerians can use US B1/B2 visa for, reminding travellers that the visa is only valid for specific temporary purposes.
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy listed business meetings, family visits, and tourism as the approved reasons for travelling to the United States with a B1/B2 visitor visa.
The embassy urged visa holders to comply with the conditions attached to the visa, warning that violating the rules could affect future travel opportunities.
“Here’s what you CAN use your U.S. B1/B2 Visa for: ✓ Business meetings ✓ Visiting family ✓ Tourism,” the embassy stated.
It also issued a strong warning against misuse of the visa.
“Remember; Improper use of your U.S. B1/B2 visa can result in permanent ineligibility for a visa in the future,” the mission added.
What Nigerians Can Use US B1/B2 Visa for
The B1/B2 visa is a non-immigrant visitor visa that allows eligible foreign nationals to travel to the United States temporarily for approved activities.
The B1 category is designed for business-related visits, including attending meetings, conferences, negotiating contracts, and participating in short-term business training.
The B2 category, on the other hand, covers tourism, vacations, visits to family and friends, medical treatment, and other recreational travel.
Although holders of the visa may be allowed to remain in the United States for up to six months, the final duration of stay is determined by officers of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the point of entry.
The visa does not permit employment, long-term academic study, or any activity that suggests an intention to immigrate or permanently reside in the United States.
Nigerians seeking a B1/B2 visa can apply through the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos.
Applicants are generally required to demonstrate strong ties to Nigeria, including employment, family connections, or property ownership, as well as sufficient financial resources and proof of their intention to return after their visit.
Visa Restrictions Still Apply to Some Nigerian Applicants
The latest reminder comes months after the U.S. Department of State announced that a partial suspension of visa issuance to nationals of 19 countries, including Nigeria, took effect on January 1, 2026, under Presidential Proclamation 10998.
The policy affects non-immigrant B1/B2 visitor visas, F, M, and J student and exchange visitor visas, in addition to immigrant visas, with certain exceptions.
However, the U.S. government clarified that visas issued before January 1, 2026, remain valid and were not cancelled under the proclamation.

The State Department also explained that affected individuals may still submit visa applications and attend scheduled interviews.
However, applicants who fall within the scope of the proclamation could be found ineligible for visa issuance or admission into the United States based on the current restrictions.
