Arsenal Thrash Man City 3-0 in Community Shield as Odegaard, Guimaraes Shine
Arsenal sent an early warning to their Premier League rivals after producing a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff on Sunday.
The Gunners needed just 23 seconds to take the lead through Riccardo Calafiori, before Kai Havertz doubled their advantage. Captain Martin Odegaard then completed the scoring shortly after half-time to give Mikel Arteta’s side a convincing victory.
The result provides a significant confidence boost for Arsenal ahead of the new Premier League campaign, while Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca faces questions after his team’s disappointing display.
Arsenal will begin their Premier League title defence against Coventry City on Friday, while Manchester City are scheduled to open their league campaign against Bournemouth on Sunday, August 23.
Arsenal make dream start against Manchester City
Arsenal’s aggressive approach from the opening whistle immediately paid off.
Rather than playing cautiously from kick-off, Gabriel Magalhaes sent the ball forward to Odegaard, who quickly combined with Calafiori as Arsenal attempted to exploit space behind City’s defensive structure.
Christos Tzolis subsequently switched play toward the right flank, where Noni Madueke helped keep the move alive before Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelly combined to create an opening.
Lewis-Skelly’s intelligent movement allowed him to escape pressure before producing a clever pass into the path of Calafiori.
The Italian defender had pushed forward into an advanced position and took advantage of the space before firing beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma to put Arsenal ahead inside the opening minute.
The goal was particularly significant because Arsenal had previously been criticised for being too conservative against City, including during their Carabao Cup final defeat earlier in the year.
This time, however, Arteta’s team showed no hesitation in taking the game directly to their opponents.
Bruno Guimaraes makes impressive Arsenal debut
One of the major positives for Arsenal was the performance of Bruno Guimaraes, who made his first start for the club and immediately looked comfortable in Arteta’s midfield.
The Brazilian midfielder displayed composure in possession, contributed defensively and helped Arsenal progress the ball through midfield.
His understanding with Odegaard and Lewis-Skelly also gave Arsenal greater flexibility in the centre of the pitch.
Rather than remaining rigidly positioned, the midfield trio frequently rotated, creating space and making it more difficult for Manchester City to establish control.
Guimaraes’ ability to cover both central and wider areas also helped Arsenal maintain their attacking intent without becoming overly exposed.
Declan Rice later replaced the Brazilian, but Arsenal continued to press forward rather than simply protecting their advantage.
Odegaard continues to lead from the front
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was another standout performer.
The Norwegian midfielder was involved in the move that created the opening goal and remained influential throughout the match.
His composure was particularly evident when he scored Arsenal’s third goal.
Odegaard received the ball in a dangerous position before showing remarkable calmness to wrong-foot Donnarumma and finish into the net.

His performance continued a strong run that had already seen him impress during Norway’s World Cup campaign and Arsenal’s pre-season preparations.
For Arteta, having Odegaard operating at this level could prove crucial as Arsenal attempt to defend their Premier League title.
Arsenal’s midfield gives Arteta more options
The performance of Arsenal’s midfield could give Arteta an interesting selection dilemma once the competitive season begins.
Lewis-Skelly’s ability to move into midfield from left-back provides Arsenal with an additional attacking dimension, while Guimaraes demonstrated that he can contribute both defensively and in possession.
Rice’s introduction in the second half also showed that Arsenal have the depth to alter the shape and intensity of their midfield without losing control.
That flexibility could become increasingly important as Arsenal balance Premier League, Champions League and domestic cup commitments.
Manchester City struggle in midfield
For Manchester City, the defeat exposed several areas that may require attention.
City struggled to establish control in midfield and found it difficult to consistently create opportunities behind Arsenal’s defensive line.
New signing Elliott Anderson, who arrived from Nottingham Forest for a reported £116 million, showed some promising moments, particularly with his passing during the opening period.
However, he was unable to exert sufficient influence as the match progressed.
Erling Haaland also endured a frustrating afternoon and was substituted before the hour mark as City made several changes.
The defeat will not necessarily define City’s season, particularly given the timing of the match and the number of players still returning from their post-World Cup breaks.
Nevertheless, the performance highlighted the importance of City’s midfield rebuilding project.
Will Manchester City pursue Enzo Fernandez?
The result could increase pressure on Manchester City to strengthen their midfield before the transfer window closes.
City are reportedly considering further changes in midfield, with Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders potentially moving on and players such as Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernandez being discussed as possible additions.
Bouaddi would provide a deeper midfield option, while Fernandez could operate further forward and offer greater creativity.
Chelsea had previously set a £120 million deadline for potential bids for Fernandez, but no offer arrived before the stated deadline.
Chelsea subsequently indicated that they expected the Argentina international to remain at Stamford Bridge for the 2026-27 campaign.
However, City’s lack of midfield control against Arsenal could intensify discussion about whether another major signing is required.
Defensive concerns remain for City
Manchester City’s problems were not limited to midfield.
Their defensive structure looked vulnerable against Arsenal’s movement, while their attempts to press Arsenal were frequently exploited.
The Gunners repeatedly found space between City’s lines and were able to move the ball forward with relative ease.
There were also moments when City’s build-up play appeared uncertain, with Donnarumma and Ruben Dias struggling to provide the level of control expected from them.
Arsenal’s aggressive pressing and intelligent movement made it difficult for City to establish a consistent rhythm.
The third goal effectively ended the contest, and the subsequent substitutions further reduced the intensity of the match.
Arsenal gain confidence ahead of Premier League season
For Arsenal, the Community Shield victory could hardly have come at a better time.
Arteta’s squad endured an uneven pre-season, partly because players returned at different stages following the World Cup.
Against Manchester City, however, Arsenal’s regular starters immediately appeared more organised and confident.
The early goal settled the team and allowed them to play with greater freedom.
Players such as Tzolis also enhanced their claims for important roles after impressive performances during pre-season.
The winger contributed two assists and showed composure in both attacking and deeper areas.
Cristhian Mosquera also gained valuable confidence by dealing effectively with the threat posed by Haaland in the absence of William Saliba.
What Arsenal’s 3-0 win means
Arsenal’s victory does not guarantee success in the Premier League, but it provides Arteta with plenty of encouragement before the season begins.
The Gunners demonstrated attacking ambition, midfield flexibility and defensive discipline against one of their biggest domestic rivals.
Manchester City, meanwhile, have plenty of time to respond.
Maresca’s team will need to improve their pressing, midfield control and attacking efficiency before the Premier League campaign gets underway.
The Community Shield is traditionally viewed as a curtain-raiser rather than a definitive measure of a team’s season, but Arsenal’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Manchester City has certainly created an early statement.
For Arteta and his players, the challenge now is to carry that performance into the Premier League.
For City, the task is to ensure that the weaknesses exposed in Cardiff are addressed before they become recurring problems.
