Babcock University has announced plans to take legal action against comedian and content creator Carter Efe after dismissing an academic certificate he shared on social media as fake.
The controversy began after Carter Efe, whose real name is Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, appeared in an interview with Egungun of Lagos, where he claimed he graduated from Babcock University with a First Class degree in Biochemistry.
To support his claim, the entertainer later shared what he described as his degree certificate on X, stating that he completed his studies at the university in 2023.
However, the university has publicly denied issuing the document, insisting that the certificate did not originate from the institution.
In a statement released on Monday, the university pointed to several inconsistencies in the document, saying it did not match its official academic records or certification process.
One of the key issues highlighted by the institution was the use of the term “First Class Upper,” which it said has never existed in its grading system.
According to the university, the only recognised classification for the highest level of undergraduate academic achievement is “First Class Honours.”
The statement also clarified that Babcock University does not issue honorary certificates to recognise outstanding undergraduate performance outside its official graduation process.
The institution explained that academic achievements are documented only through officially issued degree certificates and academic transcripts processed by the Office of the Registrar.
Addressing the circulation of the document online, the university urged employers, government agencies, professional bodies and members of the public to verify any academic credentials bearing its name before accepting them as authentic.
The management warned that forged certificates could be used to obtain employment, professional recognition, admission or other benefits through fraudulent means.
It further cautioned that individuals involved in creating, distributing or using fake academic documents could face legal consequences under the law.
In a post accompanying its official statement, Babcock University disclosed that it has begun the process of pursuing legal action over the alleged certificate forgery.

The university maintained that the document shared by Carter Efe is not genuine and reiterated that it remains committed to protecting the integrity of its academic qualifications.
As of the time of filing this report, Carter Efe had not publicly responded to the university’s latest statement regarding the planned legal action or the allegations that the certificate he shared was forged.
