The honour recognises his longstanding advocacy for young people and contributions to charitable initiatives.
The investiture ceremony took place at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, where King Charles III formally conferred the knighthood on the acclaimed actor. Images released by the Royal Family captured the moment Elba knelt before the monarch as the ceremonial sword was placed on his shoulders.
In a statement shared on social media, the Royal Family congratulated all recipients honoured during the ceremony, highlighting Elba’s contributions to youth development and community support.
Following the event, Idris Elba shared his appreciation for the recognition on Instagram. Posting a photograph alongside his wife, Sabrina Elba, on the grounds of Windsor Castle, the actor wrote, “We are thankful. The work continues.”

The knighthood marks a significant milestone in Elba’s career beyond entertainment. While he is widely known for his performances in film and television, the actor has also devoted considerable effort to supporting disadvantaged young people through mentorship, advocacy and charitable programmes.
A long-time supporter of The King’s Trust, Elba has often spoken about the role the organisation played in shaping his future. According to the actor, a grant he received from the charity at the age of 18 helped provide opportunities that contributed to the launch of his career.
The honour was first announced as part of King Charles III’s 2026 New Year Honours List before being formally presented during this week’s ceremony.
Earlier this year, while speaking at the screening of Hijack Season 2, Elba reflected on the significance of the recognition.
“I haven’t really spoken about it, but I will say that it’s a real honour to be recognised for the work. Especially trying to make as much noise for young people and the things that some of them are going through. So it feels like an honour. My family is honoured by it. I don’t even know how to talk about it,” he said.
In addition to his work with The King’s Trust, Idris Elba and his wife established the Elba Hope Foundation in 2022. The organisation focuses on supporting diaspora communities and creating opportunities for young people through education, empowerment and social development initiatives.
The actor has also maintained a close relationship with the Royal Family through his charitable activities.
Recently, he joined King Charles at a Buckingham Palace garden party celebrating the 50th anniversary of The King’s Trust, where both men surprised guests by spending time together behind the DJ booth.

Knighthoods remain among the most prestigious honours awarded in the United Kingdom, recognising individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society.
For Idris Elba, the honour reflects not only his success as an internationally respected actor but also his continued commitment to improving the lives of young people and underserved communities.
With the title of “Sir” now officially added to his name, Sir Idris Elba joins a distinguished group of public figures recognised for their impact beyond their professional achievements.
