Electronics giant Samsung has been drawn into a legal dispute after allegations were raised over the use of pop star Dua Lipa’s image on television packaging.

In response, Samsung has denied any wrongdoing, stating that “we deny any allegations of intentional misuse” after claims were made by the singer’s legal team. The matter has been filed in court and has attracted global attention due to the scale of the claims.

Legal Claims Filed Against Samsung

It was alleged in court documents that Dua Lipa’s image was used without permission on packaging for some Samsung televisions. The documents further stated that repeated requests were made for the company to “cease and desist from infringing on her rights,” but no compliance was reported before legal action was initiated.

A claim worth 15 million US dollars has been filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California. It was stated that the singer’s image was used as part of a wider marketing effort connected to consumer electronics sales. The packaging reportedly featured a backstage photograph taken at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2024.

The court filings also described Dua Lipa as a globally recognised artist whose brand has been built over many years. It was noted that collaborations with major fashion and technology brands, including Chanel, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Porsche, and Apple, had strengthened her commercial profile.

It was further stated in the documents that her image had been “prominently used for a mass marketing campaign” without her consent. According to the filing, she had “no say, control, or input” regarding the use of the photograph on retail packaging.

Samsung Statement and Defence

A response was issued by Samsung in which the company stated that the image had been supplied through a third-party content partner. It was explained that permission was believed to have been granted for its use.

“The image was used only after receiving explicit assurance from the content partner that permission had been secured, including for the retail boxes,” Samsung said in its statement. “Given this assurance, we deny any allegations of intentional misuse.”

It was also stated by the company that respect is held for Dua Lipa and for the intellectual property rights of artists. In addition, discussions were said to be ongoing, with Samsung expressing openness to a possible resolution with the singer’s legal representatives.

Further clarification was provided that the image was used in 2025 in connection with content made available on Samsung TV Plus, a free streaming service operated with third-party partners.

Ongoing Legal Process

The court document has alleged copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violation of publicity rights. It was stated that damages are being sought for what has been described as unauthorised commercial use of the singer’s likeness.

Meanwhile, the case continues to be reviewed in court. No final ruling has been issued. However, the dispute has placed increased attention on how celebrity images are licensed and used in global advertising campaigns.

As proceedings continue, further statements are expected from both sides regarding the claims involving Samsung and the alleged misuse of the artist’s image.
