The federal government has announced a new digital identity update, revealing how to get free NIN slip through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)’s NINAuth mobile application.
The announcement was made by the commission on Thursday, July 2, through its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to NIMC, the latest version of the NINAuth app now enables Nigerians to download their National Identification Number (NIN) slip at no cost.
The commission explained that the update is part of ongoing efforts to improve access to digital identity services while strengthening users’ privacy and security. It also stated that the upgraded application provides access to additional integrated government services.
NIMC advised users who already have the application installed to update it to the latest version to enjoy the new features. Those who have not installed the app can download it from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
By making the service available through the app, Nigerians can now obtain their NIN slip without visiting registration centres, standing in long queues, or paying third-party agents for the document.

The commission said the new feature makes it easier for NIN holders to access one of the country’s most important identity documents directly from their mobile devices.
The NIN is required for several essential services in Nigeria, including bank account verification, SIM card registration, government services, and other official transactions.
According to NIMC, the updated NINAuth application also comes with enhanced privacy protections, stronger security measures, and expanded access to integrated services beyond NIN verification.
The agency encouraged Nigerians to keep the application updated to benefit from future improvements and additional digital identity services.
Nigerians react to the new NIMC update
The announcement generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians sharing different experiences after trying the new feature.
Some users welcomed the development, describing it as a convenient step toward improving digital identity services.
One X user, @Oladipo_Oyebode, said:
“Yeah, I downloaded the slip with ease. I had facial recognition issue initially, second trial moving to a natural light space it got verified. Also saw the TAX number section. (Well I know mine before now. It tallied). My question now is, when are we having the plastic i.d?”
Others, however, expressed disappointment over the continued absence of a physical national identity card.
Reacting to the announcement, @defiwillsx wrote:
“You should be all ashamed. Is this the level we are supposed to be. Downloading [expletive]… What happened to us getting a proper National ID Card?”
Another user, @PrinceEtake, questioned the availability of the new feature, saying:
“Please NIMC should stop deceiving Nigerians. There is no option for printing NIN slip in the app. I’m tired of this country called Nigeria.”
