Carlos Baleba Completes £70m Manchester United Transfer from Brighton
Manchester United have completed the signing of Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth up to £70 million.
United will pay an initial £65 million for the 22-year-old, with a further £5 million available in performance-related add-ons. Brighton have also secured a sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Baleba has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with Manchester United holding an option to extend the deal for another year.
The midfielder becomes the latest major addition to United’s midfield after the club brought in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa during the summer transfer window.
Why Manchester United signed Baleba
United had been monitoring Baleba for some time and previously attempted to sign him near the end of last summer’s transfer window.
Brighton’s valuation was understood to have exceeded £100 million at the time, making a deal difficult to complete.
United revived their interest this summer and eventually agreed a substantially lower initial fee for the Cameroon international.
Baleba’s arrival also comes after United suffered a 2-0 defeat by Hull City in their Premier League opener. Santos and Tielemans both made their midfield debuts in that match.
United manager Michael Carrick will now have another physical and versatile option in the centre of the pitch.
Baleba excited by Manchester United move
Baleba described joining Manchester United as an incredible moment and said playing at Old Trafford had always been special to him.
The Cameroon international also welcomed the opportunity to work with Carrick.
He said the manager’s experience and knowledge could help him reach the highest level of his career.
Baleba added that the ambition at Manchester United was clear and that he was determined to contribute to the club’s future success.
Baleba’s Brighton record
Baleba joined Brighton from French club Lille in 2023 at the age of 19.
He went on to make 112 appearances for the Seagulls and scored four goals during his time at the club.
The midfielder made 31 Premier League appearances during the 2025-26 season as Brighton finished eighth and secured qualification for the Conference League.
His Brighton career ended with the midfielder recovering from an ankle ligament injury suffered during the club’s pre-season training camp in Austria.

Baleba thanked Brighton supporters in a farewell message, particularly for their support during difficult moments.
He recalled being substituted early against Aston Villa last season and said the fans continued to back him despite the disappointing performance.
What Baleba brings to Manchester United
Baleba is primarily known for his physical strength, defensive work and ability to carry the ball through midfield.
His best performances have shown that he can win possession, cover significant ground and quickly turn defensive situations into attacking opportunities.
During the 2024-25 Premier League campaign, he ranked highly among midfielders for possessions won in the middle third, interceptions, ball recoveries and duels won.
He also averaged 6.7 progressive carries per 90 minutes, demonstrating his ability to move the ball forward after winning possession.
His pace is another important asset. Baleba reached a top speed of 34.5km/h during the 2024-25 season.
That combination of speed, strength and mobility could give United greater protection in midfield.
Baleba could solve United’s midfield problem
Manchester United have added quality to midfield this summer, but the club still lacked a player capable of consistently providing physicality and defensive coverage.
Baleba could fill that role.
His ability to cover space should be particularly useful when United face opponents who attack quickly on the counter.
He can also operate in different midfield roles. Last season, he spent most of his minutes as a defensive midfielder but also featured further forward in central midfield.
That flexibility could allow Carrick to change the team’s midfield structure depending on the opponent.
A partnership with Santos could give Baleba greater freedom to move forward, while playing alongside Tielemans could allow the Belgian to focus more heavily on progressive passing.
Baleba could also provide competition for Kobbie Mainoo in the defensive and ball-winning areas of midfield.
Passing remains an area for development
While Baleba offers plenty of defensive energy, he is not yet regarded as a midfielder who controls games through passing.
His percentage of line-breaking passes and forward passes was below the Premier League average for central and defensive midfielders during the 2024-25 campaign.
That could become an important area of development at Manchester United.
Carrick has encouraged his side to spend longer periods in possession and build attacks through quick combinations. Baleba may therefore need time to adapt to a greater role in possession.
However, his defensive qualities and ability to carry the ball could complement more creative players such as Tielemans and Bruno Fernandes.
Injury could delay Baleba’s debut
One immediate concern is Baleba’s fitness.
The midfielder is currently recovering from the ankle injury he suffered during pre-season.
He will need to regain full fitness and match sharpness before making his competitive Manchester United debut.
United will hope the recovery period allows him to return without further complications.
Manchester United’s summer spending reaches £153m
Baleba’s arrival takes Manchester United’s reported summer spending to around £153 million.
The club are preparing to return to the Champions League after missing out on the competition since the 2023-24 campaign.
Captain Bruno Fernandes welcomed the signing and described Baleba as a major talent who can add qualities that are currently missing from the squad.
Fernandes also stressed that the young midfielder would need time to adapt and develop at Old Trafford.
At 22, Baleba still has significant room for improvement. If he can reproduce his best Brighton form, his combination of defensive ability, pace and ball-carrying could make him an important part of Manchester United’s midfield.
