Savio Scores on Tottenham Debut as Spurs Thrash Charlton 5-1 in Carabao Cup
Tottenham Hotspur bounced back from their Premier League defeat to Brentford with a convincing 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
The win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium secured Spurs a place in the third round, where they will face Liverpool.
New signing Savio marked his Tottenham debut with a goal after coming off the bench in the second half.
The Brazil winger joined Spurs from Manchester City for an initial £75 million and received a warm reception from the home supporters.
Savio makes instant impact for Tottenham
Savio entered the match in the 71st minute with Tottenham already leading 3-0. The winger needed only 11 minutes to make his mark.
He collected the ball near the edge of the penalty area before beating defenders and firing into the net to put Spurs 4-0 ahead, he went ahead and celebrated by lifting a corner flag as Tottenham fans applauded his impressive introduction.
The former Manchester City player was involved again shortly afterwards when Ben Davies added Tottenham’s fifth goal in the 85th minute.
His debut provided an immediate boost after Spurs had suffered a disappointing 2-0 Premier League defeat against Brentford the previous weekend.
Moore and Solanke put Spurs in control
Tottenham initially struggled to create clear chances against a much-changed Charlton side.
The visitors threatened first, with Greg Docherty forcing goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky into a save before Nathan Asiimwe headed narrowly wide.
Spurs eventually broke the deadlock in the 41st minute.
Mikey Moore produced a powerful strike from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner.
It was the 19-year-old’s first goal for Tottenham since January 2025.
Four minutes later, Dominic Solanke doubled the advantage. The England forward turned inside the penalty area before finishing with his right foot to give Spurs a 2-0 lead at half-time.
Danso adds third after the break
Tottenham continued to control the match after the restart.
Roberto De Zerbi made five changes from the team that lost to Brentford, including handing Mateus Fernandes his first start since completing his £85 million transfer from West Ham.
Fernandes quickly made an impact.
His free-kick created the opportunity for Kevin Danso to score Tottenham’s third goal in the 67th minute.
Danso rose to head the delivery into the net from around 15 yards.
The Austria defender required treatment after being hurt while scoring and was subsequently forced to leave the pitch.
Charlton score late consolation
Charlton made 10 changes to the side that had beaten West Ham the previous weekend.
The Championship club were also forced into two early substitutions after injuries to Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio.

Despite those setbacks, Charlton continued to compete and eventually found a consolation goal.
Lloyd Jones headed home in the 87th minute to give the travelling supporters something to celebrate.
However, Tottenham had already secured a comfortable victory by that stage.
Tottenham advance to Liverpool Carabao Cup clash
The result sends Tottenham into the third round of the Carabao Cup, where they will travel to face Liverpool.
The victory also gives De Zerbi’s team some confidence following their disappointing Premier League start.
Spurs have spent more than £300 million during the summer transfer window, and several of their new arrivals are expected to play important roles this season.
Tottenham will next face Newcastle United at home on Saturday.
The club could also complete the loan signing of Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush before that fixture.
For Savio, the Charlton match provided an ideal introduction to his new club.
His goal and involvement in Davies’ strike offered an early glimpse of what Tottenham hope their £75 million signing can contribute this season.
