Ghanaian music star Shatta Wale has spoken publicly about the circumstances that he believes led to the collapse of his friendship with Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy.
Speaking during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, the dancehall artiste said their relationship was built on mutual respect before it was allegedly damaged by rumours involving Burna Boy’s girlfriend.
According to Shatta Wale, the claims were fabricated by former members of his team after he ended his working relationship with them.
How Shatta Wale says the friendship began
Recalling the early days of their friendship, Shatta Wale said Burna Boy stood out from other Nigerian artistes because he personally informed him before travelling to Ghana and requested that he pick him up from the airport.
He explained that Burna Boy was still in the early stages of his career at the time, and he gladly welcomed him. The Ghanaian artiste added that he ensured his guest enjoyed a comfortable stay by providing accommodation, transportation and support throughout his visit.
“Burna Boy is the only artiste who respectfully called me from Nigeria and told me he was coming to Ghana, that I should come and pick him up at the airport. I have never done that for any artiste before in Nigeria, and I felt some way because I was like, I know Burna Boy, but that time he was in his low time, so we picked him up at the airport and brought him down.”
He also described how he introduced Burna Boy to different parts of Ghana and made sure he had everything he needed without having to spend money during the trip.
Rumours involving Burna Boy’s girlfriend allegedly changed everything
According to Shatta Wale, the friendship took a negative turn after he dismissed several members of his team over internal issues. He alleged that the former associates launched a campaign to damage his reputation by contacting influential people in his life with false stories.
The musician claimed the same individuals informed Burna Boy that he had been involved with the singer’s girlfriend during their time together in Ghana.
“They told Burna Boy that I was f*cking his girl he brought to Ghana, and he just bought it. I had billionaire friends they called. They wanted to break me to everybody.”
He further alleged that Burna Boy never confronted him over the accusation. Instead, he noticed the Nigerian star gradually stopped responding to his messages after returning home.

“When he left me in Ghana, things still went well, and when I saw Burna moving to places, I was always messaging him, and he didn’t reply. I didn’t know they told him that, and he decided not to talk to me.”
Despite expressing disappointment that he was never given the opportunity to explain his side of the story, Shatta Wale said he does not harbour any resentment towards Burna Boy. He added that he remains grateful for building his career independently, regardless of how their friendship ended.
