Nathaniel Bassey Hits One Billion YouTube Views, Sets African Gospel Milestone
Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has reportedly become the first African gospel artist to surpass one billion views on YouTube.
The milestone was recorded on his official YouTube channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, nearly a decade after he launched the Hallelujah Challenge, an online worship and prayer programme that began with midnight Instagram Live sessions from his living room.
Figures from analytics platforms Social Blade and ReachRanking showed that the channel had approximately 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers as of Sunday, November 1, 2026. The channel was created on March 4, 2011.
The achievement coincides with the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, which attracted millions of views across its sessions. According to ReachRanking, the opening session recorded more than four million views, while the grand finale, known as the Hallelujah Festival, attracted between two million and 4.3 million views.
How Nathaniel Bassey Started the Hallelujah Challenge
The Hallelujah Challenge began in June 2017 when Nathaniel Bassey, a gospel singer, trumpeter and pastor, started leading midnight praise and worship sessions through Instagram Live.
The initiative followed an earlier online prayer programme known as the #TonguesChallenge, which encouraged participants to pray for one hour every month.
The first edition of the Hallelujah Challenge ran from June 1 to June 30, 2017. Bassey told Channels Television at the time that the idea had started as an inspiration from God.
The sessions were scheduled around midnight, with organisers drawing inspiration from the biblical account in Acts 16:25-26, which describes Paul and Silas praying and singing while imprisoned.
The programme quickly gained attention. Within about two weeks, reports indicated that more than 70,000 people were joining the daily sessions on Instagram and Facebook.
Several Nigerian celebrities also participated, including Tiwa Savage, D’banj, Rita Dominic, Funke Akindele and Don Jazzy.
Since its launch, the Hallelujah Challenge has grown into a recurring online worship programme, with editions organised at different times of the year. Sessions typically begin at 11:59 p.m., while some editions have also featured physical worship festivals.
Hallelujah Challenge Drives YouTube Milestone
The October 2026 edition contributed significantly to the channel’s latest viewership milestone, with its opening session and grand finale attracting millions of views.
However, the one billion figure represents total views across the entire YouTube channel, not just the Hallelujah Challenge. It includes worship sessions and popular gospel songs such as Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro and You Are God.

It is also important to distinguish between views and individual viewers. A YouTube view count measures video views, meaning the one billion milestone does not represent one billion different people.
Nathaniel Bassey Joins Nigerian Artists With One Billion YouTube Views
Nathaniel Bassey joins a growing list of Nigerian music acts whose YouTube channels have crossed the one billion-view mark.
Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy became the first Nigerian artist to reach the milestone in 2021. A 2025 ranking placed his channel at approximately 3.27 billion views.
Meanwhile, some fans have suggested that Bassey could generate revenue from the massive audience attracted by the Hallelujah Challenge.
However, the gospel minister has maintained that the programme is primarily focused on worship and spiritual devotion rather than making money.
His latest achievement highlights the growing reach of Nigerian gospel music and the role of digital platforms in connecting worshippers across different countries.
