The globally acclaimed Nigerian singer Tems has been announced as one of the headline performers for the grand opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center, set to take place in Chicago on June 18.
The event will bring together an impressive lineup of internationally renowned artists and public figures to celebrate the official launch of the historic cultural and civic institution.
Tems stands out as the only Nigerian artist on the lineup, further cementing her status as one of Africa’s most influential musical exports.
The opening ceremony will be livestreamed globally, allowing audiences around the world to witness the celebrations from the Center’s John Lewis Plaza.
Tems Shares Stage With Global Music Icons
According to the Obama Foundation, Tems will perform alongside legendary musicians including Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Common, The Roots, Eddie Vedder, Marc Anthony, and U2 guitarist The Edge. Actress and producer Marsai Martin is also expected to participate in the ceremony.

The foundation described the event as a major celebration of democracy, culture, service, and hope. Speaking about the occasion, Obama Foundation Chief Executive Officer Valerie Jarrett said:
“This Grand Opening ceremony will be unlike any other, filled with music, performances, and hope.”
The ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Obama Presidential Center, a project designed to inspire leadership, civic engagement, and community development for future generations.

Tems’ inclusion in the event reflects her remarkable journey from a rising Nigerian singer to an internationally recognized artist.
Over the past few years, she has continued to strengthen her influence across global music markets while maintaining the unique sound that first captured audiences worldwide.
The singer made history in 2022 as the first African woman to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart through her collaboration on “Wait For U” with Future and Drake.
She also performed during the FIFA World Cup closing ceremony in Qatar and has since earned numerous international accolades.
Her achievements include winning a Grammy Award, receiving an Academy Award nomination for her contribution to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, and being named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama also highlighted the significance of the new center, describing it as a transformative project for Chicago’s South Side.

The Obama Presidential Center will officially open to the public on June 19, with additional celebrations scheduled throughout the Juneteenth weekend.
