The United Kingdom government has published a detailed guide explaining how Nigerians Can Apply for a visitor visa without a travel agent, giving prospective travellers the opportunity to complete the entire application process independently through the official government platform.
The new guidance aims to simplify the visa application process by providing clear instructions for applicants who need a Standard Visitor visa before travelling to the UK.
It also encourages applicants to submit their applications directly rather than paying additional fees to third-party agents.
According to the UK government’s official guidance, anyone who requires a Standard Visitor visa must complete the application online before travelling and attend an appointment in person at a visa application centre.
The government also stated that applications can only be submitted up to three months before the intended date of travel.
“You must apply online before you travel to the UK and attend an appointment at a visa application centre,” the official guidance states.
Who Needs a UK Standard Visitor Visa?
The UK government explained that not every traveller requires a Standard Visitor visa before entering the country.
Depending on their nationality, some visitors may instead qualify for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), making it important for travellers to confirm which entry requirement applies to them before beginning the application process.
For applicants who need a Standard Visitor visa, the standard visa allows visits of up to six months and carries an application fee of £135.
The government also outlined additional visa options for special circumstances. Individuals travelling for medical treatment may apply for an 11-month visitor visa at £234, while academics can obtain a 12-month visitor visa for the same amount.
Long-Term Visitor Visa Fees and Application Process
Frequent visitors to the United Kingdom can also apply for long-term Standard Visitor visas, which permit multiple visits over several years. However, each individual stay must not exceed six months.
The government listed the current fees for long-term visitor visas as follows:
- Two-year Standard Visitor visa – £506
- Five-year Standard Visitor visa – £903
- Ten-year Standard Visitor visa – £1,128
The guidance further explained that every traveller, including family members, must submit a separate application and pay the applicable visa fee individually.
Each applicant is also required to attend a visa application centre appointment in person.
However, the government noted that one person may complete the online application on behalf of a partner or child who is unable to do so themselves, although each applicant must still attend their own appointment where required.

The publication of the official guide is expected to benefit many Nigerians and other African travellers who have traditionally relied on travel agents to process UK visitor visa applications, often paying additional service charges.
By applying directly through the official UK government website, applicants can avoid unnecessary intermediary costs while maintaining full control of their application, supporting documents, and appointment scheduling throughout the process.
The latest guidance provides a clearer pathway for eligible travellers seeking short-term visits to the United Kingdom for tourism, family visits, business activities, medical treatment, or academic purposes.
