Martin Short Breaks Silence on Daughter Katherine Short Death at 42 Describing It as a Nightmare

Actor and comedian Martin Short has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of his daughter, Katherine Short, saying the family is living through what he described as a “nightmare.” The emotional revelation comes months after Katherine Short, 42, died by suicide in February following what her family says was a long struggle with severe mental health challenges.
Speaking during an appearance on CBS News Sunday Morning, the 76-year-old actor reflected on the pain his family is experiencing and the broader realities of mental illness. He said the loss of Katherine Short has deeply shaken their world.
“It is a nightmare for the family,” Short said during the interview. “But the understanding is that mental health and cancer, like my wife’s, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases they are terminal.”
He went on to describe his daughter’s long battle, adding, “My daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could until she couldn’t.”
Family Speaks on Loss and Privacy
The Los Angeles County coroner confirmed that Katherine Short died by suicide. At the time of her passing, the Short family released a statement expressing their grief and asking for privacy.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” the family said. “The Short family is devastated by this loss. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
In the wake of her death, Martin Short has remained largely private, only now choosing to speak openly about the impact on his family and the importance of understanding mental health as a serious medical condition.
The story of Katherine Short has also drawn attention to her professional life and dedication to mental health support. She worked as a licensed clinical social worker and contributed to community outreach programs, family support groups, peer support, and psychotherapy services. She also worked part-time at Amae Health, an organisation focused on mental health care.
Katherine Short earned her academic qualifications from prestigious institutions, receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender sexuality studies from New York University in 2006 and later a master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.
A Family Marked by Loss
Martin Short shares three children, including Katherine Short, with his late wife, Nancy Dolman. Dolman, who was married to the actor for 30 years, died in 2010 at the age of 58 after a battle with ovarian cancer.
The actor has often spoken about family being central to his life, and this latest tragedy adds to a series of personal losses he has endured over the years.
Despite the grief, Short continues to honour his professional commitments. He is set to appear in an upcoming Netflix documentary, Marty, Life Is Short, which premieres on May 12. The film is expected to explore his life, career, and personal journey over several decades in entertainment.
