Tony Wilson, bassist, songwriter, and co-founder of the soul band Hot Chocolate, has died at 89. His family confirmed his death. Tony Wilson passed away on Friday at his home in Trinidad. He helped create many of the band’s best-known songs. He also built a sound that stood out in the 1970s music scene.
His daughter shared the news in an emotional message. She said he “left a lot of music behind.” She also said the family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace. Meanwhile, his son Danny spoke about his father’s life. He described the hard work and focus that helped him succeed in a tough music industry.
Rise of a Chart-Topping Sound
Wilson was born in Trinidad. He started his music journey early. At first, he performed with several groups. Later, he formed Hot Chocolate with frontman Errol Brown in the late 1960s. Soon after, the band began to gain attention.
Their big break came in 1969. They recorded a reggae version of John Lennon’s Give Peace a Chance. Lennon approved the track. As a result, the band secured a recording deal. This moment launched their career.
After that, they worked with producer Mickie Most. Together, they created a sound that blended soul, pop, reggae, and disco. This style attracted a wide audience. It also set them apart from other acts at the time.
In 1970, they released their debut single Love is Life. The song reached the UK top 10. From then on, the band enjoyed steady success. Year after year, they delivered popular songs.
Wilson worked closely with Brown. Together, they wrote major hits such as You Sexy Thing and Emma. These songs performed well in the UK. They also gained strong attention in the United States. Because of this success, Hot Chocolate became one of the first mostly black British bands to achieve major chart success in America.
In addition, the group reached a rare milestone. They released at least one hit song every year for 15 years. Few artists matched this record. As a result, they became known for consistency and wide appeal.
You Sexy Thing stood out as one of their biggest songs. It reached platinum status. Later, it returned to the charts. This happened after it appeared in the film The Full Monty. The song then reached a new generation of listeners.
However, Wilson later stepped away from the band. He decided to focus on his solo career. He released albums such as I Like Your Style and Catch One. Even so, these projects did not reach the same level of success as his work with the band.
Still, he continued making music into the 1980s. After some time, he chose to step back from recording new material. Even then, his earlier work remained popular.
In his later years, he lived a quieter life. Yet, he stayed connected to fans. His family often shared updates about him. In addition, he appeared on a BBC programme. During the show, experts restored one of his bass guitars. This moment reminded many people of his long bond with music.
