Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has inaugurated the remodeled Abuja City Gate, a landmark project designed to improve the entrance into the nation’s capital and reinforce Abuja’s image as a modern and welcoming city.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Thursday, was attended by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, and other government officials and dignitaries.

According to a statement issued by the First Lady’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, the project forms part of the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s wider efforts to improve the city’s aesthetics while creating a positive first impression for everyone entering Abuja.
Wike Credits First Lady for the Initiative
Speaking during his monthly media briefing earlier on Thursday, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike disclosed that the idea behind the remodeled Abuja City Gate originated from Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
“When you come to a city, the first impression of the looks of the city will motivate you to do something there. It is not our brainchild, it is the brain of the first lady,” Wike said.
The minister explained that the First Lady had raised concerns about the condition of Abuja’s entrance after comparing it with city gateways she had seen during official trips abroad.

“The day she called me, she said, ‘Minister, you have been travelling; is that how the city gate of other countries are?’” Wike recalled.
He added that he later met with Senator Tinubu to discuss the matter further.
“I went and met her to understand very well. She said, ‘Why can’t you do something to beautify the place? Anybody entering Abuja will say this is the city of Abuja,’” he said.
Project Supports Abuja’s Urban Renewal Vision
The commissioning of the remodeled Abuja City Gate reflects the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s ongoing commitment to improving public infrastructure and enhancing the capital’s visual appeal.

Officials believe the upgraded landmark will provide a more attractive gateway into Abuja while supporting efforts to position the city as a destination for investment, tourism, and business.
The project also joins a growing list of infrastructure and beautification initiatives that have been completed and commissioned across the Federal Capital Territory as part of the administration’s broader urban development agenda.
